What can I do about my depression?!

Question: I've been really depressed since I dropped out of high school senior year, I've been having some big family problems with my dad being an alcoholic and both parents arguing all the time that it really affected me in school. I have also been stressing out about being unemployed. I've really been trying hard to study so I can get my GED but my problems are causing me to feel lazy and too depressed to even think. I also feel pain every now and then in my neck and back and I get alot of head aches. If any one and give me any tips on what I can do I'd really appreciate it because I spend most of my time alone which is causing me to loose most of my friends.

Mary, I feel for you. Have you spoken with a psychiatrist? Get some help now! It sounds as if you are still quite young, you have so much potential amazing things in front of you, based on the choices you make. Yes, once you get in a depression, it is hard to get motivated and you can develop physical pain.

While you are getting help, go for a walk outside for at least 30 minutes every day. Keep your head lifted up, and if you see another person, smile or at least nod in a friendly way. This may sound simplistic, but it has worked for me.

Do you have something uplifting to read? You may want to try Norman Vincent Peale's Power of Positive Thinking - its old, but its good! Read for at least 15 minutes each day - no matter what.

If you listen to music, be careful to pick songs that have a positive message.

Everyone of us has that little "inner dialogue" - the voice that tells us that we look good or we look bad or whatever. When you are depressed, it is important to find a way to change it to something that supports you, such as:
I am getting happier every day. (think of the best compliments you've been given & write them down - you can read these to help uplift yourself)

I also have been helped by the audio c.d.'s from effective learning systems, I included the link below. I especially have been helped by the c.d. Become Totally Positive Automatically.

I so want to see you beat this! Good luck!

some people don't know what it feels like. I understand and i went through the same thing for along time. Talking about things really helps too, my mums my hero. www.beyondblue.org.au great information Keep smiling and think positive :) Report It

Depression can lead to all sort of things like, physical, emotional, as well as, psychological problems, but the thing is it is your life and you cannot take make anything take your happiness away from you even if it is your family, work, school whatever it is you can get over it and its just a matter of time. You have to be patient with yourself and appriciate what you already have. If you truly want to get over your depression then go to barnes and noble and pick up a book named The Secret, read the whole thing and your life will truly change. God bless and good luck, oh and also, dont worry alright :)

turn to jesus!!! trust me, once you learn about the scriptures, you'll find that all those things don't even matter, as long as you're walking with jesus, everything's alright. god bless you. you'll be in my prayers (as 'preacher' as that sounds)

This is beyond me, but I know there is a guy on here that works with depressed people a lot. I think his name is PsychologyGuy. You might want to contact him. There is a symbol in front of his name though. I read his profile once and he is in the field and specializes in depression.

The best thing to do is to meditate on the causes and conditions for your depression. You may not be able to do this in your home, and will have to find a quiet, comfortable place that you can visit often. Maybe a bookstore or library, if you're into that sort of thing? Coffee shop? And then think hard about what you hope to accomplish. A GED is very important, and you certainly will be able to achieve it. Good luck.

    Job = money for friends

Job NEEDS study to get qualifications

No job no money = depression and lack of satisfaction with life.

Family Problems = tell your parents that part of the reason that you dropped out of school was the arguing - and you still are affected by what is going on.

Is your father an alcoholic or a drunk?
Alcoholics NEED alcohol - Drunks WANT it
If there is a bit of fish wife behaviour going on at home he may be hitting the booze to get mentally away from the nagging and the fighting - but DO NOT tell either of them that or you might get kicked out.

Your head and neck pain is highly likely from stress; and or from not sitting properly when you study or when you watch TV etc.

Plan each day four study periods - of 30 minutes duration - 7 days a week. You do not have to actually feel you learnt anything you are trying to get into the habit of study and giving yourself something to focus on other than your siutation. Have a special study area set up - good lighting, good ventilation, away from noise and arguments - or buy anti noise ear plugs from the drug store, all the equipment and books you need to study. Do NOT allow anything else in your study area - Do NOT do anything else in your study area.

Try to get 30 minutes exercise a day - even if it is a walk for a few blocks.

Do a plan for the next five (5) years - what you want to do and when e.g. study for what, complete by when, get what type of job in what type of field and paid at what rate, friends-what type of people do you want to make friends with and what would you have to do to meet those types of people, Savings Plan - what money will you save and how - even if you start off with .50c a week while you are unemployed.

Finally try this site - www.moodgym.anu.edu.au

Good luck - the depression will eventually lift - but you did not become depressed over night and YOUR ARE NOT going to wake up one morning with all your problems gone and feeling on top of the world.

Ponder if you think you should go to a doctor about your depression.

Listen Mary,I grew up in a disfunctional family.Looooong and miserable story!I went through alot of what your going through.Definately been there. For me ,it only got worse because I didn't have any role models and I was too ignorant to ask anyone that could possibly help.Because of the majority of the world's view and so many "christians" giving the Truth about God and Christ a bad repoir not many people want to hear it anymore. You can get a temporary fix for depression through man's remedies but temporary is the operative word.I was stuck with depression, anxiety, fear, resentment, much anger, and the list goes on.Nothing would take it away.I'm here to tell you that there is a real Jesus,a loving Jesus, and a saving Jesus! I've lived a personal hell most of my life and it was the real Jesus that freed me from bondage to all of this!Jesus is who He says He is and if you don't believe me then ask Him for yourself. He will make Himself known to you and give you a lasting solution to your depression, your family, and most importantly, your soul.Satan only comes to kill, steal, and destroy; depression is part of his bag to keep you from true happiness.I love you BUT Jesus loves you better!!!

for happy life feel the power of meditation & healing and many more in

    Umm...thanks Mike.
Mary, if you would like to talk, send me a message.
