Self harm problem ?!

Question: Me and my friend were talking the other day about self harm, and it got me thinking...

Ever since I was little I've always bit my lips, often so deep that it was quite difficult to stop the bleeding. Apparently I used to do it instead of sucking dummies / pacifiers.

So I grew up doing it. Even in my sleep I'd do it, and wake up covered in fresh and dry blood.

I do, however, know that this could become a problem, so I chew gum most of the time to stop me biting my lips. Unfortunately, we're not allowed to chew gum in class, so whenever I get made to spit it out I get into biting my lips again. So by the end of class, I have a mouth full of blood and skin. Obviously this can't carry on.

Recently I've started this habit were I'll slice my lips open numerous times, deep, with razors, knives, craft scissors, pins, or whatever I can get my hands on that's sharp. Sometimes I do it without realizing.

Do I have a problem, or is this normal? How can I stop myself from doing it?

Are you sure you aren't depressed..not that I would know. You do hurt yourself though not just the lips but your bulimia...which by the way can really screw your body up..cuz I use to be. Anyway in class you should try mentos...you can chew on them but they are mints not gum..or get special permission from your teachers to have gum. You need to learn what makes you do that stuff to yourself. When you find the root or triggers you can stop it by stopping the cause. Ask for a friends help...when they notice that you are doing something bad they can call you on it and encourage you. Just make sure to get someone you can trust.

P.S. you aren't weird for it or anything...it is just a habit like biting your nails...the bulimia isnt though

I don't mean to cram the dangers of bulimia down your throat so sorry if that came across that way...did you know that bulimia doesn't even work that well...most bulimics are normal size...so if you really are that desperate try again maybe.

As for the not having friends or a consoler...maybe there is a teacher that you can trust...if you have absolute NO people..then find someone and build trust until you can tell them.

i think the best thing to do is to get help, its like cutting its a stress releaver or maybe a way to get all of your anger of frusteration out. talk to your school counsler or a therapist. if you tell your school counsler they might give you permision to chew it in class because of your condition.good luck hope i helped<333

O my.....i think you need to talk to a doctor, you might say ur not depressed, but there is something going on if ur bulimic and not happy and ur hurting your self.....maybe too much anxiety just get some help because its not normal u are hurting your self :( Good?Luck.....about the gum...talk to the teacher/principal and let them know why you need to chew gum. maybe they will let you

I am starring your question because I also bite my lips and my tongue and my cheek and it bleeds. I can't help it.
I also pick at my face any little bump, it's bad. If there are no bumps to pick at, then I'll pick anyways and make a scab to pick at. Same with inside my mouth, I'll like, bite these big holes in my cheek.... sometimes I worry that I'll bite through one day.....

In your case, you are not seeking "attention" you are seeking "help".

You need to ask yourself this - do you want to stop this behaviour? Or do you want it to continue running your life.
If the answer is "yes, I want this to stop" - then you really do need to see the school nurse. For the appointment just write down "personal issue" or "sick" don't be specific. If the nurse can't help you, she can at LEAST guide you in the right direction :) There IS help out there !

My best friend would cut herself when she was a teenager. She said she liked the release and the way it made her feel like she was in control.

this is self harming , you need to seek help. Take a look on the internet im sure theres bound to be a local group or counselling one to one on this..good luck!
