Sleeping too much can actually make you tired. Try for a regular schedule of anywhere from 6-10 hours and see what works for you. I had depression pretty much all my life. I remember one summer I did almost nothing but sleep. I believe this was during a time I so desperately wanted to lose weight that I barely ate. I remember one time waking to go to the bathroom, but when I tried to get up I got so dizzy I just fell back into bed and slept a few more hours. Though you don't want to or can't do much of anything, make it a point to snack on healthy foods all day. Maybe take a B-complex vitamin. Try setting five achievable goals for the day. Even if that list includes stuff like shower, get dressed, brush hair, etc. At some point you will work up to bigger goals. Whatever doesn't get done, move it to the next day. Start setting long-term goals, too (more schooling, marriage, etc.). Below I'm including some sources that might help. Print out the pages and read them lying down if you have to. Make an effort to get up and move around. Wander through the house periodically. If you have stairs walk up them, sit if you have to, then walk down them. At some point you will have enough energy to walk around the block. Work your way up to walking up the street, then around the block, then 10-minute walk, then 3 10-minute walks a day.

Try positive self talk and doing activities you enjoy. Stay busy. If you have to sleep, allow yourself a 15-20 minute nap. Invest in you. Meet any needs you have--sleep, eat healthy, move around. Keep your mind busy. Look in the mirror and practice smiling. Use creative outlets: build a model, exercise, dance, any form of art, play a musical instrument, read, daydream, journal, talk aloud to yourself.

Will you consider counseling? There are various techniques. You might be able to get cheap or free counseling through your local hospital or health clinic.

you really need some help and fast, i don't know what to tell you, other than is there something that is bothering you to make you like this, something other than just your depression?

what is your medical problem?....email me your story..I have time on my hands and I want to help you....be strong, keep your chin up!!

if you really cant go see a doctor, take meds, then all you can do is wait it out and stay tough. this is life; you cant stay happy forever. what goes up must come down. you are in the trough right now. stay tough, you will come back out. i know what youre going through...believe me. if you were able to get up and type this entire thing to seek for help, YOU CAN HELP YOURSELF. please. stay strong?

you need to find some one to talk to. Maybe an old friend or close family member. Or just anyone that can make you feel better

You can't recover unless you're willing to see a doctor and get some medication. You'll probably have to eat something (don't worry, we all do it) to have enough energy to get to a doctor. You won't recover from anything unless you're willing to take action.

Clinical depression is caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. Exercise and a change in attitude can help, but you won't be able to do either of those unless you treat the cause of your depression.

I don't know why you say you won't or can't take meds, but that will help you, you need help, you need to go see a dr. and they will put you on medication that will help you. I have been there too. Do it, you can do it. It's your life, you only get one chance at it, take it!!! It will get better. Take it one little step at a time. Even though don't have the energy, do something, anything, and then you will want to do something else. Get up, take a shower, get on the phone and go!!!

Oh, honey. I know you do not want to use meds, but I think that might be best. I used to be in the same boat. Then I went to see a psychiatrist. Things started to seem better after a while. I wish you only the best.

I had a breakdown from Depression from all kinds of abuse. Family took me to the doctors, where I was put on meds. It was the only thing that brought me out of it. Depression is a chemical imbalance of the brain. Ginko (available at drug stores and Wal-Mart) can help. Suicide is NOT the answer, I know. You can go to a clinic if you are 18, and have none or little income, for free. Maybe an aunt, uncle or other relative can take you. Another tip: always keep 3 reachable goals for yourself.

i think you've gotten to a point in life where you've understood how meaningless life is.....you dont need any of dat stuff....there is one person whom i go to when i feel like dat and his name is Jesus Christ.....when i read the word, he gives me such peace and love...he loves you so much that he took the pain and suffering, even death just for you....Jesus can help you get through that depression....there is one place in your life that only he can fill...dont deny him, accept him and you'll see what im talking about....but by accepting him, you will not win the lottery or live like a king, but you will find love, peace, and eternal life with him...god bless you friend....think about what i said..

Dude, you HAVE to see a doctor, and you HAVE to get on meds. Your case sounds serious. Would you rather be dead? I'm gonna guess no, because you're here asking for help, but NO ONE on this board is adequately qualified to diagnose you, or give you substantial advice. Please go get some proffesional advice, pal. Make the right decision. I'll be rooting for you. Feel better soon.

I have chronic deppression personally almost my entire life, cooking helps me, I stopped taking my meds though. but having someone to talk to helps, just find someone out there that will listen, your death would benefit noone, it would hurt the people you love, I got to a point where I could think of only one or two ppl worth living for,I was so close to that final jump so many times, but just find some flicker of light to hold onto. just find something that makes you happy, or atleast eases it a bit, get a blog, sometimes typing out your problems can help, make it private if you dont want anyone reading it, but its better to get it out in the open so you can examine it.

Some of my family and several friends have clinical depression. their lives where hell without the drugs. You might have to try more than one, or a mix. You can get help through the United Way's Family Services for little or no money and with privacy.

If it is clinical depression, then you probably can just beat it with hard work and dedication. Talk to a professional. Try the drugs if he suggests it.

Good luck either way, H.

I went through something similar to that, it only laster a few days, but man, it stunk. I was fortunate enough to just phase out of it, and no one really noticed, just thought I was tired.

I'm not a doctor, so I can't give you any advice, though I just ate even though I really didn't feel like it. I didn't gorge, but I snacked and drank water. I guess that helped me. I think you've got something worse than I did though.

Hun, depression is a disease and depression can also be a symptom of another disease. I don't know what your circumstances are about not going to see a doctor but sometimes its just what we have to do in order to feel well and get our lives back on track. Also know that you are not alone.

Talk to a friend or family member about how you feel. Talking actually helps. Please don't do anything to hurt yourself. That is not the solution, getting help is.

I know it isn't the answer you want to hear and I am sorry you are going though this.

My prayers are with you...

Your problem sounds like a worse version of mine. Does it just hit you like your feeling depressed and all of the sudden some other feeling just creeps up and somehow makes you fell WAY worse? Well its not you and its okay if you can't think "happy" thoughts that didn't work for me either...as in at all. In fact it made me feel worse. There probably isn't much you can do with help. Everyone needs help. It ISN'T your fault depression in something lie a chemical in balance in the brain and it can happen to anyone even a stinking rich person with a great life. Please whatever the reason I'm sure you can solve it after you get help this might interfere with how your thinking and making choices if its a money problem and that's why you cant go I'm sure the hospital can also help. If not try church? I really hope you live because if you don't then Id feel really sad even if I don't know you. Maybe you can try knew things? Either way you have to get moving that cure ISN'T going to just come out of nowhere go find it church, drawing, talks, buy a pet even they help alot I hear!

I will cry with you...... I would hold you if I could..... Do you KNOW there are people out here that care ?? We do !!! Very much !!!!!!! Is there no one you can call to come to you ?? There are Hot Lines for people who just need to talk..... Sometimes talking to a stranger can help put life into perspective and help us see what we don't !!!! My life was like a roller coaster ride till I was 34 years old... I have been through some rough times, then, now I have, not perfect, but wonderful life... and you can too..... Life is never perfect, but there is love, understanding, compassion, you just have to reach out for it !!!!! You do not say if you believe in God ? Not a push , just a question ........ If you feel it in your heart, I am here..... You can go to my profile and e-mail me.... I have spoken to MANY young people over the years on this thing... Just know that I and others do care...... go in peace..... God bless

No idea what to say, except that you really, really should go and see a doctor. Or at least call one and have them come to you.

I gave it a star, maybe one of my contacts will have a better tip.

But please, call a doctor. Even a doctor can give you better tips than all of us here can.

I wish you strength, and good luck.

first, take a shower. I know, it's simple but it will help. Then eat something, even if it's some crackers and drink some water. Not soda - water.

In the morning, get outside in the fresh air (even if it's cold, spend a few minutes out there).

I know it seems like a lot but try. Telling you there is hope will sound hollow. Just take it one minute at a time. Get up, take a shower and eat something. Get outside in the morning.

After that - try and do something that you enjoyed once, even if it's just for a few minutes. Move, eat, sleep and start reaching out a little.

Hang in.

There is plenty of mental illness in my family and among my friends. From my perspective, it is often caused by biological things, but sometimes caused by leading a bad life.
The way I see it, there are three ways to approach this: medicine, naturopathic medicine, and spirituality. Personally, when it comes to stress, I am a huge fan of transcendental meditation. You think of a word with no real significance (I use "one") and repeat it in your mind, completely forgetting everything else. I also move some of my concentration from one area of my body to another, relaxing each muscle as I go.

If you want to go the spiritual way, I'd suggest doing the following if you aren't already. Completely rid your life of pornography, try not watching any NC-17, R, or even PG-13 movies for a while, listen to happy music and not death metal, read scriptures, find ways to serve others, and go to church. Of course, the greatest advice in the realm of spirituality is prayer. My advice is just based on opinion and my experiences, but I personally know that God knows everything you are going through and exactly what will help you best.

I would suggest you speak to professional people such as a helpline if you do not want to go to a doctor or hospital. Depression as bad as yours needs to be addressed immediately. Sorry, but I do think you need to realise you need proper help to help you out of this serious illness. I hope you do this today rather than leave it any longer for your own sake.

Hello friend,

If you are feeling that badly, please go see your Doctor. He/she can help or refer you to someone that can help. The first step is up to you. You obviously want help because you have found the strength to write this question, so push yourself a little bit more and seek the professional help that you need and deserve. Doctors and medication are not that bad when things are this severe. Toughen up and help yourself.... you ARE worth it and don't ever forget it! If you feel you can't do it for yourself right now, do it for the family/friends that care about you. You are worth it.

I don't have an answer for you, I'm sorry.. I just wanted to say hang in there.. and I hope you get some help soon x

Hi!
Okay, this is controversial but not eating for a while might not be the worst thing in the world. If you don't have an appetite then perhaps your body is suggesting you lay off food for awhile anyway. People often think that skipping a meal is the worst thing in the world for your health. From my experience, I beg to differ. I have a lot of food allergies/intolerance that sometimes lead to depression. I found that even half a day of fasting really clears my mind and gives me more energy. After a 3 day fast, I felt like a completely new person.
But what I've just said is potentially dangerous- I'd hate to think of you 'just laying in bed starving to death' as you said. I don't know your health history, but if you're not dangerously thin and have a history of food allergies, then you could give it a try. Good luck and keep us updated.

My standard post follows, but, if you are young, antidepressants are unsuitable for young people. See depression treatments, at ezy build, below, in section 2, (much more detailed) or the Myspace blog of shaneris, and consult a doctor, to eliminate thyroid problems, etc. as possible contributing factors: also seek a referral to a therapist using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy. It is your decision, and yours alone, as to whether to take any antidepressants offered, but, before you do, read section 1, and check medications out at www.drugs.com so you will be on the lookout for side effects, like sexual dysfunction. My strong recommendation, however, is to follow the advice of my doctor, his associate, and Nathanial S. Lehrmann, MD, Marcelle Pick, OB/GYN NP, and Dr. Mercola, at www.mercola.com and many others: avoid antidepressants (pages 2V, and 2Z refer, & antidepressant websites: page 2). The reasons why we all share the same view on this are explained in full, as you will find, if you read it, and section 1. All of their advice, (except prayer, because many people are not religious) I have incorporated into the "core treatments" of the multidimensional approach to treating depression, including occupational therapy, relaxation techniques, and exercise, with others as options, such as the supplements: Inositol, or SAMe, or herbal remedies, like St. John's wort. If you are diagnosed with clinical (major) depression, antidepressants may be necessary for a while, which will give the treatments time to become effective. The antidepressants themselves need at least several days, or even weeks to begin becoming effective. It's a good idea to taper off them slowly, with medical advice, after several months, say, to a couple of years, at most, because they are only effective in the long term for about 30% of people. Because of this, you would be well advised to begin the treatments immediately, and maintain them. I'd just thank your mental health care provider, and pocket the prescription, trying the treatments for a few months, to see if they are sufficient for you, before considering filling it (unless clinically depressed, and having great difficulty functioning, or suicidal, in which case I'd take them). If the amount of daylight you have been exposed to recently has reduced, perhaps due to the change of seasons, see Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) in section 2, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris and, instead of taking 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily; replace 2 of them with cod liver oil supplements for the winter months only! (or, as probably a better alternative to the 2 cod liver oil supplements: 1 teaspoonful of cod liver oil, with a little butter, to ensure its use; I take mine on sourdough rye bread, or toast, covered with fishpaste, and pepper, to mask the strong taste). Consider having your doctor test your vitamin D levels, using the 25 Hydroxyvitamin D test. Optimal levels are 50 - 55 ng/ml (115 - 125 nmol / L. It should be above 32 ng/ml. Those people who receive adequate exposure to sunlight, daily, won't need the vitamin D from cod liver oil, but many people, particularly those in latitudes far from the equator, find this difficult, to achieve. ~~~ Drink some water, and eat something nutritious. Your brain, and body need a good diet, to perform properly. BASIC HEALTHY DIET: A healthy diet consists of: 5 serves of vegetables, daily, including a leafy green one, such as broccoli, spinach, cabbage, kale, or silverbeet (swiss chard), and a yellow/orange one, like yams, (sweet potato) carrots, or pumpkin/squash. One of the other serves should be legumes, such as beans, peas, or lentils. A serve is 2 heaped tablespoonsful, or half a cup (125 ml). Also 3 - 5 serves of fruit: one should be orange, or grapefruit, for the vitamin C, and bananas are high in potassium. In addition, your body needs at least 2 teaspoonsful of oil. Olive oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil, or macadamia oil, are the healthiest, but you can get some in the form of Omega 3 fish oil, mentioned below. Also a serve of protein: meat, fish, poultry, or eggs. For calcium, some yog(h)urt, and/or cheese and/or milk, or tinned sardines, with bones. ~~~ If you are incapable of taking proper care of yourself, at the moment, call the emergency number: phone 911 in the U.S.A., 999 in the U.K., or 000 in Australia. Otherwise, have something quick, and easy, like soup, now. Although you don't have much energy whwn depressed, sleeping all day will not help, so force yourself to stay awake: shower, or splash your face with cold water. Sleep only at night, for 8 hrs, MAX!!! Get some Omega 3 fish oil supplements. Drink 2 - 4 cups of green tea daily. Eat healthily, in accordance with your "nutritional type" as determined at http://www.mercola.com/ SEARCHBAR. http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris As with all herbal/green teas, lemon, or a little sweetener (NOT ARTIFICIAL!!!) but no cream, or milk. Xylitol is preferable, (health food stores) or fruit sugar (fructose, such as "Fruisana", from supermarket sugar aisles) or even a little honey, because these will reduce "sugar spikes", which later deplete you of energy. Minimise/eliminate consumption of highly processed foods, particularly grain products, such as white bread, donuts, cake, cookies/biscuits, or anything with sugar. Opt for more wholefoods, non-starchy vegetables, and fruit.

Everything you refuse to do is what will help you. Why would you want to leave this world??? If you die you will be really missed in this world. It doesn't seen like it but people care. You need to go to them. Use your last bit of energy to get the help you need. God will give you strength. If you won't live for your own sake, then live for someone else like a pet. Pets are your friend no matter what you do or the choices you make. God bless!!

You should talk to Jesus. He loves you and will help you with your depression. He will give you joy unspeakable and full of glory. He has changed many lives and can change yours without drugs or hospitals. I know a lot of people on here will tell you that he is not real but he is. I have been in your shoes before. When my wife died I was depressed and one day I was at her grave with a gun in my hand and he sent to me my brother to the cemetary to let me know that I was loved. I am still here today and am not depressed anymore. He will do the same thing for you. Just talk to him, tell him that you believe in him and need his help. He will come to you and take your burdens from you. He loves you enough to die for you. If you would like to talk get ahold of me and I will do anything I can to help. Pray and seek his face.

Jhn 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Mat 11:28 Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

1Pe 1:8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see [him] not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:

It's good that you are asking for help.

I can sure understand saying "they say think positively"... I've been told that too; but hey, that's what clinical depression is: the inability to think positively.

You might have more than one kind of depression, or more than one cause. & yes, there are things you can do to help yourself, without meds & without a dr.

Sunshine ! yes, sunlight helps. It actually does help depression, especially Seasonal Affective Depresion. You can order a lightbox or lamp online; get the kind that has full-spectrum light & is intended for light therapy -- not just for reading. while you wait for it to arrive, go outdoors at least twice every morning: morning sunlight is more helpful than afternoon light.

Emotions require energy. So, you do need food. SInce you haven't been eating, begin gently: choose foods that are easy to digest. even if the amount is small, be sure to eat a variety: fruits, veggies, protein. It's even okay to just live on liquids for a while, if you are wise about which ones: V-8 juice, milk, eggnogs, protein shakes, fruit smoothies, soup broth.
Also: there are over-the-counter herbal helps, such as
St. John's-Wort, the B-vitamins, and calcium.
If you have a vitamin D deficiency, you'll have zero energy. take 600-1200MG of D a day.

DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL. not one drop ! alcohol is a depressant; it leaves a person worse off.

the resihi mushroom has amazing energy-boosting capacity; it gives energy without the jitters caffeine gives. Get a good-quality reishi supplement or tea, as fast as you can.

Also, if you have a parasite you'll have no energy; & yes, you can catch those buggers easily, even if you're careful. If you're lucky, it'll be a common parasite called Giardia Lamblia (sp?); it can be eliminated easily with MSM (methyl-sulfanyl-methane), which is the organic form of sulfur. Tastes awful, but it works.

every five minutes, say aloud somethng that is good about you or your surroundings.I mean it: set a timer, and when it rings, say something that is good and that is true. Even if it's the same thing you said five minutes ago: say it again. Our words are influential, & they even influence us, ourtselves, when we say them aloud. It can be as small as: "the fly on the window isn't pestering me right now." or, "the color of the paint in this rom is okay." keep it up. After a while you'll be able to notice other good things, like "nobody frowned at me yet today", or "I like being in the sunshine."

Neu-Becalmed is an over-the-counter natural food supplement I order regularly. It contains vitamins & tryptophan. It's helped me reduce my need for medicine.

ask at a good-quality herbal/health food store, they can suggest other herbs that may help you. Some will help with mood, others with energy level .

And: don't wait to "feel like it" or to "feel up to it". Just DO IT. Take care of your body. Check things off on a list, or promise yourself you'll do something for yourself every hour on the hour, or something -- and keep your promise. Eventually, you'll "feel up to it" again; but until then, you just have to do it

keep trying. YOU ARE WORTH IT. since you are deciding to not use man-made meds, you will need to give the natural route a bit more time than man-made meds require. So, be patient & persistent. Remember, emotions require energy; right now you don't have the strength to feel much emotion -- maybe not even any emotion. As you get stronger, you'll regain the abillity -- the physical strength -- to feel positive emotions again.

You must get some help.
National Suicide Hotline: 1-800-784-2433

Excessive sleeping can leave you more tired & fatigued.

See a professional social worker or psychologist to talk about the underlying issues for your misery. The sessions are confidential. It will require some work on your part...you have to get to your sessions.

If you have a plan & access to the means you need to at least call the hotline...it's confidential.

Suicide is the only decision in life you can't change. All other decisions are changeable & have options.

If you haven't tried everything yet...you're not ready to hurt yourself...and I doubt if you have.

Just keep going...

I have the feeling you've had bad experiences with the mental health profession. Otherwise why would you be so adamant about no MDs, no meds & why bring up hospitals?

remember God loves you, and that matters above all else.
