How to stop thinking?!

Question: Sometimes avoiding past upsets too much only makes the memory surface more often. If you feel that you are truly past whatever issue is bothering you, I would practice some techniques to control your mind, as another person suggested. The dumpster idea is very good, another one is imagining your mind as a black board, and you are writing all of your bad thoughts on this blackboard. Then imagine erasing all of these bad thoughts. This is a site that provides some examples of concentration techniques:

You need to realize that some people just have unruly minds, and it is necessary to just refuse the thoughts from reoccurring. Distraction helps sometimes. Get some fresh air and take a walk. Don't let your mind control you. It is also important to realize that some things will never completely leave your memory, and that is why concentration techniques and controlling your mind is important. I sympathize with you and good luck!!!

Take a vacation alone. Read a book or a Bible. It helps trust me.

plug your nose until everything goes dark

If you are suffering from preoccupation with your past, perhaps consult a therapist.

Also, here is a website that I just found for you...

Get rid of any momentos - photos, etc.

this is good if ur a spiritual person.

ok u have to be in a quiet room with little or no noise or relaxing music should be playing. then close ur eyes and picture a big dumpster in ur mind and picture evrything getting dumped into it and being throen away. untill ur head is clear and u have nothing on ur mind.

this is good if ur not so spiritual

get a hbby try doing something u love write down everything u wanna get outta ur head thats what i do its very relaxing and it helps sometimes.

you need to remember the past, it's what you are today and in the future.. just don't dwell on it that's when it becomes a problem.. if it's a problem see a psychiatrist or a counselor

You don't want to go threw life in a bubble thinking everything is perfect do you when it's not. I know it sounds all good doesnt it! Listen if for some odd reason you go threw the rest of your life thinking everyhting is perfect one day when something horrible happens it won't just be the little peices! It will be every peice from now until then! It will take some MAJOR recovery! Who knows if you will ever get out of that depression! You can't carry your bags now and leave them where ever you can becaus there is always a return address! They will come back to you one day!

I have had a hard time with this. Always thinking about the past. Regretting things. Wishing things could be as they were. Having strong sad feelings about it.

The only way I found to help is to keep busy. Surround myself with new friends and activities (like a support group in my case), and it helps me to think about the fact that I'll be dead someday and it won't matter then - and that I should be determined to not let the precious time that I have get wasted like that.

I don't think you can stop thinking, unfortunatelly. All you can do is change your thouhts (hopefully for the better). Try writing down what you think. You might have some awesome thoughts. Hang in there.
