My new doctor doesn't understand that I am terrified of Drs and tests PLEASE!

Question: am reposting this in other categories to get responses. I just moved to a new city a few months ago. Just before I moved, I was dx with hypothyroidism. Last week, I needed to have my thyroid rechecked to renew my Rx. I found my new Dr. based on an ad that said how friendly the Dr was, "we treat you like family" etc. I fear nothing so much as I fear illness, medical tests and doctors, but I absolutely had to go because without my thyroid Rx I am a total mess. So I go to this Dr. last Tue. just to have my blood panel done. I told the Dr. how afraid I am of drs. and how much anxiety I have about medical tests etc, and he says "Oh I don't blame you, it can be scary. I'll try not to hurt you when I take your blood and you won't have to see the needle" etc. But needles and and blood are NOT my fear at all, (an anomaly?)- I am just afraid of the information they are gleaning ab my health when they do the tests, not the means in which the test is done.

Most physicians feel that they know better than you and my geuss is he sees your fears as irrational and therefore does not repect your feelings to the extent that you feel he should. When you return tell him in no uncertain terms your concerns and if he doesn't respond as you feel appropriate then seek another physician. The decision to see another MD will probably result in more testing however and your testing is probably virtually complete with this guy. You have to remember that although there are many labs and you may have gotten the results back quicker he probably has many patients and he may be attempting to ease your anxiety by discussing your results with you personally and therefore you have to wait for another appointment. You would be well served to consider the sourses of your anxiety and atempt to overcome your fears of the unknown.

If your anxiety is this high, doctors are the least of your worries. It's possible your anxiety is an offshoot of microwave sickness. Anxiety is my number one symptom!

You'll need a Psychologist to help you with this fear and also a new doctor because this one is not meeting your needs. Do you take anxiety medication for panic attacks and just regular antidepressant for the anxiety? Or are you afraid of the pills? My boyfriend sound exactly like you. He finally found an antidepressant Effexor to help with the anxiety issues, although he still gets bad panic attacks. He has take Xanax before, but prefers Ativan. What he'll do before he goes to the doctor, especially the dentist is pop one of the pills for panic attacks to calm him down so he can get through the appointment OK without freaking out. So you see you are not alone in this. But you do need to get help from a very understanding physician and the one you picked is not the right one for you. Secondly you need to get treated for the anxiety, and also for the panic attacks. The drugs for panic attacks, xanax and ativan are highly addictive so you only take them when you are faced with your worse fears. I'm pretty sure I know what you are going through because I see it every day through my boyfriend and his high levels of anxiety. I really do hope you find help and understanding. Good luck!

Your fears are totally irrational. The results of your tests are entered into a computer or file under your name and forgotten about as soon as it is entered. If you do not like your doctor, then you have plenty of time to find another one that might be more sensitive to your fears.
