How to treat/fight adolescent insomnia?!

Question: I'm 13 years old and all my life I have had insomnia. I never get my sleep and I wake up exhausted. I have major back pains due to a horrible mattress and being a dancer. In addition, I have a very stressful life. I also sit in bed for HOURS thinking about the next day, stressed. I've tried calming myself down with calm, slow music. That doesn't help, it just distracts me more. I even made my entire room dark. I ussually only get five to seven hours of sleep a night. I dance untill 7:30 or 8:30 Mondays through Thursdays. The weird thing about this is that I only never fall asleep when It's a school night. On the weekends, I'm fine. I really need to get to bed. Any tips?

There are a lot of possibilities, ranging from simple (stop drinking caffeinated drinks) to more complex (dealing with your back). If you are taking any medications for your back pain, maybe they are affecting your sleep. Have you been to the doctor about your back? There could be an underlying medical condition. You should also try talking to your parents about buying a new mattress. You might even try sleeping on the couch for now, to see if that works out better.

For stress, I've heard that it helps to write down everything you are thinking about at the end of the day, such as a to-do list of everything you need to do the next day. This might help clear your mind.

I have the same problem and am interested in what answers you will get...

i got some...websites seems to have good info on it. Good Luck!

i heard that medical marijuana works for this and ive had friends who have been insomniacs and smoked it. they say it helps but the only way to get rid of it is to relax a few minutes before trying to sleep. no bright lights.

I have the same problem and am 16..I tried lots of things recommended by different people like writing in a diary, relaxation techniques, getting up and doing something if i cant sleep and taking sleeping tablets..Hope you find something that helps..

read some feng shui ("fung shway", that chinese room decorating thing) books or articles on the internet, learn the basics, and feng shui your room. that really does improve sleep, your mind relaxes.

as for your mattress, if you have a comforter or a sleeping bag put that over the mattress. stretch before you go to sleep and crack your back.
