Anyone taking depression medication?!

Question: I've been talking to a counselor at my school and she recommended a doctor, they both think i should take medication and i've even bought it but am kind of scared it will bring me over the edge, i kindoff have a grip on my suicidal thoughts by simply avoiding going there and being disconnected from myself.. what if this medicination makes me go there? Am 20 by the way. Anyone using or has used medication to treat their depression plz give the 411. Thanks!

The FDA even warned against that. Trust your instincts on this one and stay away from the drugs. Instead, work on making your life better and less stressful and stay away from negative people and do some things you enjoy.
You can feel better without drugs, and they are dangerous and can have really bad side effects.

I think you should try it with lots of communication between the doctor and counselor. I've been taking Effexor for a couple of years. I've also taken Paxil and Lexapro. I didn't have any problems with suicidal thoughts, but everyone is different. The risk of the anti depressant sending you over the edge is low and the benefits are enormous. Good luck.

You dont have to take medication if you dont want to. Plenty of people can get better by counselling, CBT, diet, exercise and lifestyle changes so dont feel trapped into this course of action.

That you're sometimes suicidal indicates a higher degree of depression which is why the doctor will have suggested medication. Some antidepressants can increase the urge to selfharm/commit suicide. This is usually in the first week, and it's mostly not a concern since you're prepared for it to happen you'll blame the thoughts on the medication, not on yourself, and are less likely to act on them.

After the inital week, the medication will kick in and you will start feeling a lot better.

Hope this helps.

No....I'm depressed enough, thanks

I took zoloft for a few years, and it helped immensly. I also had suicidal thoughts and the zoloft didn't worsen them - at first I felt sorta numb, like the disconnection you describe, then slowly I felt better and better. One bad experience I had was with Paxil, which my family doc prescribed for me. Immediately I felt so much worse - anxiety to the max, couldn't sleep. I only took it for 3 days then stopped and made an appt. with a psychiatrist. I say, Just follow your treatment plan, but keep an open communication with your doc. If you start to feel anything you don't like, call the doc immediately. Sometimes it takes a few tries to get the right meds. Good luck, and it CAN get better!

Considering you have been given advice about seeing a doctor that may very well be the right thing to do as you cant post you whole life on here i suggest that you take up the suggestion to see a doc...it may very well help good luck!!

i have been on prozac paxil and now zoloft.
I am 22.
like u i've had the suicidal thoughts and was actually put on 51 50 ...after i popped a bunch of pills ( so stupid)

anyway...take the medication and do it religiously...
Do NOT skip any doses or take more than prescribed...this is what causes the imbalances and makes u feel kooky...
trust me...

they usually start u with a very low dosage and increase as needed. side effects include dry mouth sweating dizziness and shakiness....it depends on the person...make sure u let ur counselor know if u feel suicidal or homicidal or if the side effects are really severe.
they will go over this with you. give medication a chance...it takes a little time for it to kick in but when it does...it really turns your frown upside down....

email me if u need someone to help u through this scary time

I have taken Cymbalta, Effexxor, Wellbutrin and Prozac. They made me feel better and helped me get thru my suicide thoughts

i m 19 using three anti-d's escitalopram, impramine hydrochloride n loevosulphride.i started using it when i was 16.don't think its helpful but my doc says it helps to deal with prbs.they help me a lot and i feel better but SUICIDAL RISK with anti'd's is a major concern for e.g i attempted 4 attempts bcz medicines made me suicidal so be careful.everything has good as well as bad effects.also now i want to get off anti'd's but i can't.

I've been on them all since a very young age 13, Prozac is what started this all for me they put me on it at such a young age because I got really sick and I was just somewhat down I guess you could say.... I had to get off of prozac though because I got an alergic reaction to it and had to be taken off of it imediatly and while I was on it I was acting up a little bit in school, I think it was just because I was young, but they said I was manic so I got dignoised with bi-polar disoreder... lol I've been on efforx, lexapro, welburtin, abilify, lithium, seroquil, lamictial, prolly more too I just can't think of them, honeslty I do not like being on medications, I've had to much hassle with them trying to find the "right" med they do help, but it honeslty comes within you have to find it within yourself keep your head up high stay motivated... I am 17 now and are still dealing with depression, I've dealt with suicidal thoughts, I acutally tried commiting it before. I will just tell you that you have to just tell yourself this is a temp feeling and not let it take over you, Just remind yourself as you are dealing with the stressors that life has to offer it is never to late... I hope this helped you.
