Give me some names of mental illnesses.

At the turn of the 20th century, hysteria and psychosis (or insanity) were major ones although they were really other illnesses that were falsely identified. Most female mental patients were diagnosed with hysteria. Hysteria was a catch-all. Many mental patients were women who had physical problems more than mental ones. Some were simply having menopause or excessive discharges. See if you can find some Insane Asylum archives. Records of patients are very brief, but they do still have them in most cases. Real mental illnesses were the same as the ones we have how, but they usually were given different names.Neurosis was also a general term for many of the patients. We still use it today, but it was used a little different then and was not very descriptive. If you have an University library nearby, you should be able to generate a list of illnesses by scanning the psychological abstracts from the years you want to study.

Hysteria or Mass Hysteria
Melancholy
Histrionics
Broken heart syndrome

Same ones as today.

I think they just called them insane in the early years
