Will this affect my future children?!

Question: My father and my younger brother both have the same mental disorder: schizophrenia. My father has the more extreme case with hallucinations, etc. What my brother has is more mild, like paranoia. Will I get this later in life? Can my offspring possibly have it too?? :(

Schizophrenia usually develops at around a certain age, late onset is rare. If you are many years older than your brother, you are very likely not to get it. It can often skip generations. I don't know if there is a genetic test available yet. If there is, you could find out how likely it is that you could pass it to your children. About 1% of Americans have schizophrenia. There are better treatments now for schizophrenia and many can live relatively normal lives. When you have children there will be even better treatments.

Im only 20 years old, my brother is 19. But I am just trying to be proactive about my future life :) Report It

  • It's always possible, but completely unknown.

not necessarily they are not thought to be heirideritry

Schizophrenia is hereditary. But that doesn't mean you'll definetely have it or that your kids definetely will. My grandmother (father's mom) had schizophrenia. But no one else in the family has it, and her side of the family is enormous.

Symptoms of schizophrenia almost always manifest in the late teens to early twenties.

Unfortunately, it might. Before you have kids you should research the treatments for these disorders; they're getting better every day.
If you haven't gotten it by now, I'm guessing you probably won't, just a guess.

I have heard that is inherited, but here is an awsome web site to get true answers. I pray you will find them!!!!
