When anyone gets a new texture in their mouth, their tongue will seek it out repeatedly, thinking it to be foreign. That is especially true for a child with the metal caps, so smooth and round and metal as opposed to the sharp thin shape of his natural teeth. Give him a couple of weeks to get accustomed.

Assuming these are the metal caps, be aware that cold, whether air or ice cream, will penetrate the caps, causing mild pain.

Fingers in the mouth truly are not going to cause infection, as the tooth is now sealed-shut.

Being as the dental work was extensive and fresh, his mouth will be extra sensitive for a few days, and there may be slight swelling to the area.

Avoid chewing gum, as it can stick to metal caps.
Avoid candies that cling to teeth -- Jolly Rancher, Sugar Daddies, Taffy, Tootsie Rolls and Pops, etc. -- as these can pull the caps off
(M&M's and chocolates are fine, most peppermints OK too)

To help your son get his mind off the new teeth, give him something "fun" to eat with his mouth. (for the next few days popcorn may be too rough) M&M's or raisins or chips will give him time to have more than just his shiny new teeth for his tongue to feel.

i am sorry i wished i could help but i dont know im to upset to know, sorry

They suck for making you puts crowns on him to begin with. He'll lose those teeth anyway. The only thing I can say is to try to distract him from it for a while, and see if he can move on. Give him a while to adjust to them though, I still play with my filling I got in 6th grade, and I don't have SPD, so unless it really really bothers him, you shouldn't let it bother you.

I hope that helped a little.

I am a senior psychology major and ironically, I do not know much about this disorder. Have you tried putting Anbesol on the area to numb it? That might work, temporarily at least. Otherwise I guess you'd have to ask his dentist or doctor of some tricks to use to make it less painful or noticeable.

Give him a video game... a handhelp ps2 would be cool. If he id distracted with his hands.. he will touch them less :O) hope this helps.

This might be a problem even if he didn't have SID.

I'm hoping that as he becomes more familiar with the crowns, he will leave them alone.

In the meantime, I could only advise that you do all you can to keep his hands clean.

Warm regards,
Paul

You could try that horrible tasting stuff you can get from chemists you paint it on your nails to stop you biting them. And distract him i no this is easier said then done good luck.

Poor little fellow, tough job for a five old.You have some great answers,so I will say a prayer for him. God Bless.
