I hear the word Bi-Polar nowdays, but I use to hear the word Manic-Depression?!

Question: What is Bi-Polar and is it the same as Manic-Depression? I had a friend my senior year of high school (class of 1995) that was manic depressant. Are they one in the same with a different title? When answering this please don't copy and past from Web MD, just give it to me simple.

The classification of psychiatric diseases in the US is done by a group of mental health professionals and is known as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM for short). I think they're up to the 4th edition now.

Anyway, that manual defines the criteria for diagnosing mental illness. Manic Depression is the old terminology used to describe what is now called Bipolar Disorder. They are the same thing. "Manic" is where the person has really high energy and sometimes behaves erratically, and the "Depression" part is where they may be sad or unmotivated. The term "Bipolar" reflects the fact that there are two different mental states that can occur.

bi-polar means you are mood swingy. like one minute you can be happy the next you are the world's most depressed person. i dont exactly know what manic depression is...look it up on wikipedia or ask a doctor about the symptoms

Hey there,I have bipolar.& Yes basically it is the same thing as manic depression. They just changed the wording a little.
Bi polar is having manic mood swings. You can be veryyyy happy and hyper and feel on top of the world then go to veryyy sad and suicidal. Its tough but yeah same thing as manic depression.

Bi-Polar is the same. It means that you have sudden mood swings very often. You may be cheerful one moment, and start crying the next. You don't have control of your emotions and tend to EXAGGERATE them with Bi-Polar.

Bi-polar disorder and manic-depressive disorder are the same. My son has bi-polar disorder and it can be very challenging for the one who has it and his or her family. There are medications that help though.

They're the exact same thing. The name of the disorder was changed, I don't know how long ago.
