Mom takes her sons medication. Need some advice?!

Question: My friend has a 10 year old with Attention Def disorder. which the doctor gives him Ritlin for it. His mother has custody of him every time he goes to his fathers house (every other weekend) he never has any med to take. When asked the son about it he says he does not take any med. But we know for 100% she get the percription filled every month. The son is out of control with his medical problem, Doing very bad in school, and in society. No one even in his family wants him over because of his behavor. If he was getting him meds he would be lots better. My friend suspects that the mother is taking the drug, because when adults without this disorder takes this drug it is like speed to them. She has had drug problems before.
So where does he need to seek help from. Law, attorny, or maybe Family and children services. He does not know where to get help from. Has anyone ever had to deal with this problem before and if so where did they get help from.

Please, call Child Protective Services. Apparently the drugs are going somewhere, and not where they should be. They could assst in helping her get some much needed help. Now here is the caviat; if you take a child away from its mother, there WILL be harm done there. Take care to make sure that everyone in the family agrees that the buy is the first priority and make sure that all the decisions are made from a position of love and protection for him and his best interests. Your friend, which I guess is the childs father (?) can ask the courts for an emergency placement for his child into his care and for him (the father) to become the child's medical guardian, much like Britney Spear's parents did with her. This way, HE is soley in control of all meds and the administering of them. This can block the mother's access to the drugs and help her face her own demons. Best of luck to that baby and the rest of you, Blessings....

I'd call Child Protective Services (Child and Family Services) first and foremost. They will do an investigation and I imagine it would be pretty cut and dry to see if the prescription that the doctor is writing is getting filled or not despite the fact that the son is unmedicated.

From there, it's hard to say. Depending on the outcome of CPS's investigation, the custody issue may need to be brought back into court if mom is determined to be unfit. Who was the child's law guardian (court appointed attorney that serves the child's best interests)? They might be able to be reappointed if need be.

. I would contact CHADD and see if there are some specialist in family services you could talk to.

They will be able to guide you to the right services. This boy needs help.

Ultimately, this is a problem that will be handled through police/and or Social Services if it is to be handled in court.

If I were dealing with the situation, I would make a couple of quick phone calls to ask in general terms, of a pharmacist,
a Dr. or Hospital. They could give the clearest direction and information of the process required.

I cannot under emphasize the importance of documenting through written means, or taking notes of what you actually observe with the date.
