Anti depressants and alcohol. can just 2 small beers change things?!

Question: ive been a bit manic in recent weeks, really happy and then down. yesterday i was happy enough. sleepy most of the day then a bit hyper...had 2 small beers at a social gathering (as i was nervous) and then my head felt weird and i felt depressed and this morning i have felt really Depressed and am at work doing nothing, (not functioning). Im like a different person every day, is this the Depression or the Duloxetene im on? i only had 2 small beers but can that transform my mood? im determined to stop drinking anything but it is quite hard when everyone else is and if i get nervous

I am bipolar and have been for my whole life. I am 30 now and have finally realised that I shouldn't drink - at all. I used to use it to relax but would just feel selfloathing and distress the next day - two beers seems to be the max for me. I think you should see another dr and get a second opinion. If you can somehow get control of your moods you can live a pretty normal life. But if the alcohol is not working for you - don't drink it. PS I LOVE moomintrolls!!!!!

you should NEVER miix tablets and alcohol because you get siide affects leadiing to overdose

Alcohol is a depressant. If you have depression already it will effect you more than others whether you're on medication or not. Then there's the matter of mixing the medication and alcohol, which is never recommended, regardless of the medication.

Beer is a depressant so yeah it will have an effect on you

keep of the booze - not a good mix

i just found it either goes to my head quicker or when i was on celexa i could actually drink and drink till i passed out, since being off them i cant drink like i did on those!
but as you know we are told to avoid alcohol when taking anti D's
for two small beers i;d just say your in a mood swing you don't say how long you been taking your tablets and if they are anti D's
maybe it would be a good idea to talk to an alcohol councillor to address your issues with drink,i know how you feel as i do the same....
is it effecting your work?if it is then i would see a doctor and get signed off to do the work you need to do with yourself.

The effects are different for everyone, I guess.
I used to binge drink while on antidepressants and nothing ever happened. It's not a good idea, but for me I was fine. It may be because I was on a low dose, though?

i havent been working for the past month, just been in my room in bed out of bed and sleeping 1/2 the day.
i havent been drinking or anything but i have just had no energy or motivation.
ive been on anti depressants for 5 years and i havent had a drink for almost 2 years, because it messes with my medication a week or so after i have dunk.

You could always drink a couple of beers but once you have gotten used to the fact that you dont need to drink to have a good time, you will begin to feel less nervous.
i know it feels like you have alot better time when drinking, but we really should when on medication, espically if it cancels it out.

hope things start to look up for you

Hi Darkhouse, if you ever find yourself in the situation where you're offered a drink and you don't know how to say "No", just remember you've got friends here on the Internet who would support you. No one can make us do things against our will. We're not slaves to our friends or to drinks. If you are able to show your determination, your friends will respect your choice and not try to change it with peer pressure. If you're finding it hard at first, make up a reason that sounds valid, like you've paid hundreds of pounds on a detox programme or you're giving alcohol up to raise money for a charity, etc.

As for your mood swings, there might be genetic reasons but it doesn't mean there's nothing you can do. I've read that people who have an exceptionally high demand for vitamin B's are prone to mood swings. I am not sure if that's true or not but I do believe that there's a link between our moods and what we eat. Do you eat enough fresh, homecooked food or do you rely heavily on ready meals and takeaways? What you eat can make a lot of difference to your physical and mental state. If you can afford it, I suggest you see a nutritionist to find out what's lacking in your diet and do something about it.

A deficiency in calcium can make you feel nervous. Drinking more milk and eating calcium rich food such as cheese (not too much though) and tofu should help.

I decided to add this --- I know someone who went into a coma after mixing drink with his depression medication. He died a few months later at the age of 32. I wouldn't want to see any other young people lose their lives and future in the same tragic way.

i used to drink on anti depressants, and it never effected me like that; however, people react different ways, and this may be why they say not to drink while on them. i know its hard not to...trust me. nexxt time, stick to one and then switch to soda for the rest of the night. i know it helps to relax you, but right now is relaxation worht the wo days of weirdness that come after? like i said try one beer next time, or maybe a mixed drink would react differently. the next few times you go out just limmit yourself to one and see what the differences are. lastly...work situations can handle mood swings, most places just want you to show up and do your job. so long as you arent being balligerant or calling out every other day i think you will be ok. that being said, it may be smart to let your boss know that your haing small issues and that you will do your best to be a good employee (i do it, and when i do show up and dont call out im praised for it unliek i would be had he not known i was having issues).
