wait
if he has been fine since he went cold turkey
then he doesn't even have BPD.

people who are not on meds for BPD
become a lot worse and they're highs become
too high and their lows become toooooo low.

there are 20% of people who have BPD but refuse treatment.....so 15% of those commit suicide.

so i don't think your son at all has BPD.
cause he wouldn't be fine for 4 months now.

he'd probably go through psychosis...
so since he hasnt.....don't worry about it.
your son is perfectly fine.

It is possible to do well for months at a time and still be bipolar. If he is truly bipolar, his mood swings will eventually occur again.

He possible to be misdiagnosed
bipolar is now the catchall diagnosis
see if you can get him to another therapist and Psychiatrist for another opinion

Yep, many people with bipolar affective disorder are able to have steady mood for a majority of the time. However, if your son is off his meds long enough he WILL have a return in symptoms, most likely worse than before, as the meds are a way of protecting his brain from further imbalance. It's important that he stays on his meds until the clinician managing his meds suggests a change.

The biggest problem with medications for bipolar is when they work, the person feels better. So since he is better he believes he is cured. This is a false assumption. Once he stops the medication, then slowly the condition reappears and he cannot understand why. Get him back on his medications and back to the doctor.
