Depression and no insurance?!

Question: i've been depressed [on and off] for about 7 or so years now. and for the most part i've been dealing with it myself. I've only told a few close friends in the past and my boyfriend about it. I'm not trying to get any sympathy and I'm not even really trying to have any one tell me exactly whats wrong with me. My problem is that I am no longer covered under my parents health insurance and i currently don't have a job either. What can i do to get help? Its so hard for me to even talk about it with people who don't already know, and even then i still have so much trouble. but i'm really starting to get scared and i know i need help. I don't know how to overcome this. But i dont know what I can do with no insurance and no job [please don't be rude and tell me to just get a job. Ive been having trouble finding work, let alone something with benefits]

I have the very same problem with not having any insurance so I can tell you what I have done. First of all, call your local mental health clinic or hospital and tell them your problem. They should be able to set up an appointment or give you a number to call. They have a lot of programs set aside for people like us with no insurance. They can give you medicine that are samples a lot of the time and you don't have to pay anything. I had a hard time talking about mu depression at first. The more educated I got on it it became easier to talk about. Depression is actually a chemical imbalance in the brain and medicine can certainly help, but not cure it. There is a good chance you will have to take meds for it the rest of your life to control it, but you will definitely feel better. Some of these medications may not work at first, but once you get the right meds you will feel like a human again. Also, some clinics and centers have you pay on a sliding scale according to what you make or your parents make , but they will make sure you get the help you need. I ws so tired all the time until I found out the depression caused that. The brain doesn't get enough of a chemical called serotonin which makes us feel good-I just thought I was lazy or something. Some people are ignorant on the subject of depression and will tell you to snap out of it which just isn't possible with the kind of depression it sounds like you have. Don't even thin about working until you get to the bottom of this--you probably won't be able to work right now anyway. In some states you can also apply through human resources for a temporary medical card. Feel free to e-mail me or give me a number and I will be glad to tell you everything I have done and where I have goptten my help. United Way helps sometimes. I take one pill that costs $344.68 a month for 30 pills. They often give me a coupon from the company and I give it to my pharmacist and everythng is paid for--that realy helps. The help is out there for you--you just need a little help locating the right people. Good luck and God Bless--u r n my prayers. Kathy

I see a doctor where the visit is about $50. He prescribes me generic prozac which i fill at wal-mart for $4 per month. First visit probably costs more if I remember correctly- about $75. Worth it.

Try Cathiolic Charities in your city.
It's no or low cost and DEFINITELY NOT Catholic.
There is no religious bias and the therapists are not necessarily Catholic.
If that's not comfortable for you, try contacting a pastor or minister at a church you know and they should be able to direct you.

You can call a few places to get rates. There might be non for profit organizations that might be able to offer services.I don't know if you are religious. You can always talk to the priest or minister.

I applied for Medicaid. As long as you don't have more than $2000 in the bank (something like that) you should be accepted. Through Medicaid, I was able to get them to cover the costs of a psychiatrist, therapist, doctor and dentist.

Sorry to hear about your situation. With Depression, everything is always magnified to be bigger than it truly is. A small problem all of a sudden becomes this huge thing that is hindering you. And if a tragedy happens, it can get really nasty! The best place to find peace of mind is in God! If you can find a good church, with people who truly care and want to help you, you can find peace and comfort. But I do not oppose getting therupy. Alot of places will work with you financially. I would call around and see who is willing to help. Alot of times, churches will help you with that as well.

I have had depression ever since I was almost 16 years old. The perfect place to go is a Guidance Center. That is a wonderful place to go if you do not have insurance. And having a therapist is so wonderful. And if you don't click with one therapist you can always talk to another one who may suit you better. I wish you all the luck in the world. Depression is so hard to deal with, especially by yourself. Please do try to find a Guidance Center or somewhere who is based on income. You can also try the indigent fund. I don't know how it is in your town, but the indigent fund organization is at the court house. No, you don't have to talk to a judge or anything, it has an office of it's own. GOD BLESS YOU AND BE WITH YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, by the way I am 54 years old.

1.) Talk to your state's Dept.of Social Services (look in blue pages of phone book). They will assign a case worker to review your case to qualify for free psychiatric care and meds.

2.) Women can get antidepressants prescribed by a clinic or doctor without seeing a psychiatrist. Look in your area for a med clinic for the poor. They may also give you free samples for meds. Walmarts has most common antidepressants/antianxiety meds for $4 a month.
