It just wasn't as publicised as it is now.
Cutting has been around for a long time. It isn't anything new.
its been around and widespread for ages, its just one of the hush hush private things that females tend to do (and quite a few of them)
its been stereotyped by popular culture...by teens.
"a person who cuts is a depressed emo kid"
but its been around probably in the 80s too, but obviously not as popular. theres a slayer song that has to do with cutting-"Wait and Bleed" i think..and also a nirvana song

and xacto knife for such purposes.
Then there the seen in Richard Harris'
A Man Called Horse, where he cuts himself.
its been around for awhile.
alot of kids are doing it so they look "cool"
(atleast at my school)
i think its gay.
i friend does it and when he does it he always thinks
"wow. i'm bleeding and my life still sucks"
