It depends.

Some people actually suffer from sleep disorders, and if you are depressed or hyper or drink too much alcolol or caffeine, you may never regulate your sleep.

Without knowing any more details about you, this all takes research on your part.

Again, some people cannot fall asleep or stay asleep. Chances are there is something else going on: you stay up too late and have erratic hours, you are nervous or tense or anxious, you're depressed (causes sleep deprivation), or you drink too much or drink too much caffeine (sodas too). Maybe you take ADHD meds, or eat too late, or watch too much TV or computer before bed. So much affects the ability to sleep, it's not even funny.

Ask yourself and check these things out if you are determined to give up the meds. I've been through this, and often it does become a bit of a dependence, which is hard to get through. I'm not saying you are addicted, but a simple need could make you keep using it, and giving it up is slow going, it won't regulate over night.

Yes. You will likely suffer rebound insomnia after you stop taking Ambien, but this should last no more than a week or 10 days at the most and more likely only a few days. After that time you will sleep like you did before you ever started taking Ambien.

I ask myself the same thing but with Valium instead.. I don't feel like I'll ever sleep normally again without Valium or 'something else'.. Scary really.

..but that doesn't necessarily mean Ambien is the same?

It is quite possible, yes. If you like, try a natural non-addictive homeopathic solution like Calms Forte - you can find it at any drug store or wal-mart or anywhere...
