Want To Travel But I Have Anxiety Attacks .. Help??!

Question: I have had anxiety attacks since my freshman year of high school. I'm now a freshman in college and still struggle with them. I went to a counselor for 3 years and a hypnotherapist a few times. I am also on medication for this. I think it's because I'm scared of death that I have these attacks. The problem is that I would LOVE to travel, but I'm too scared because of this. I want to know if there is anything you suggest that I do to make these things easier for me. Personal stories are welcome too!

Hi,

If you feel a panic attack or feelings of anxiety creeping up on you then try this word repetition technique that I learned that helps me to quickly 'snap out' of my panic attacks:

I simply repeat the words 'cream cake' over and over in my head as quickly as I can without stopping. You could use any word or words you like really but that's what I chose (because I like cream cakes). It apparently works because it doesn't give your brain time to process the panicky thoughts and so helps you to relax again. Seems strange I know ... but it works for me!

There's also a free ebook that I found really useful called 'Get Rid of Panic and Anxiety for Good'. If you want to take a look you can find it at: http://curepanicattacks.premiergold.info... Even though I got it for free it has helped me absolutely loads!

I have them too. I always have a drink before getting on a plane. That helps. Then I realize it is a mental thing and over time it goes away. Then I started having them on ski lifts for no reason (I have been riding them for a long time with no problem) but then the car ride attacks would go away (go figure)

I have that probelm too. my solution is to bring something to read to distract yourself. out of sight, out of mind.

I was in the same boat as you a few years ago. I was having anxiety attacks really bad and I was also afraid to travel. I finally did and had anxiety about gettting anxiety. Every little trip I took got easier. I was on Paxil for a while but I
just didn't want pills anymore. Exercise really helped me as well. I would put a cd on of relaxing music and get my mind off of anxiety. It seemed to help. Now for the most part I am anxiety free. Ihope things get better for you. Life is too short to have everything pass you by.. Good luck!

I went through a 10 year phase of having them also. Eventually they just stopped. There are drugs you can get prescriptions for that help (zanax) or for me a few stiff drinks would eliminate them. Good luck, I know it's a nasty feeling almost like you are losing your sanity.

think of a time that you felt calm and think of it when you are having an anxiety attack. also what helps me is to say to my self is that I am in control of the situation and think of the positive side of the situation. you can also close you eyes and and in your head say to your self relax your toes for example and etc.. while doing that start with your toes and go up from there. that works for me. and I also drink lots of water in small sips to help calm my stomach.

i used to have panic disorder so bad and was even on zoloft but the panic was still there. then i got the linden method http://www.lindenmethod.net and i made a full recovery. it works great and I really recommend it.

Well, you have your medication. Travel with someone you are comfortable being with. There are books on traveling that give lots of tips on what to do and what to expect. Who ever is your travel partner and you need to decide how you will handle problems that could arise and how to let each other know that there is a problem. Study using the Internet and books the area you would go to. If you line-up where you will stay and make a reservation it helps reduce the scariness. Guide books tell you about hotels, places to eat, things to do. Do this with one or more friends and you find out what it is life. I think you will love it. There can be problems, but you make a decision to take things in stride. Then you have great stories to tell others when you get home. I travel a lot.
