Will SSRI antidepressants help my anxiety?!
Question: I have severe anxiety from a phobia and also a little OCD. I have tried to solve it using breathing techniques and other methods but nothing is working and I heard 120 million prescriptions are done for SSRI so there must be somethign good about them. I am wandering what peoples experience of SSRIs are and which one is best (Prozac, Paxil etc). Thanks

Hi there, I took Prozac for a year the first time I used it. I was suffering from depression caused, I think now, by anxiety.
It absolutley changed my life to be honest, BUT it did make me act a little stupid sometimes, especially after a drink. I have since (in the last five years) been back on Prozac twice, but felt that it didn't have quite the same effect - maybe the underlying factors had changed? Who knows.
I would give it a go in your situation, I recall that Prozac and other SSRIs are effective for OCD, so you may find this is what you need.

Certain SSRI's will help anxiety issues. Speak to a psychiatrist.
They may help in the short term. What you really need is help processing your underlying issues that cause your phobias and OCD. Medications help as long as they are used in conjunction with therapy. They are for for short term relief of the symptoms and don't by them self cure the underlying issues.
