I've heard that a good way to break bad habits is to replace them. With dieting, people can replace unhealthy foods for healthier ones. With smoking, people can replace cigarettes with glasses of water, or anything they can physically replace the habit with. Could you find a hobby or some other way to replace these habits? I'd have to know more about what kind of habits they are, really.

it would help a little to know what these habits are. You can try taking up habits that aren't weird like collecting things (stamps,cards) or having a garden. Something to keep you busy and proactive. Doesn't help you or anyone else if you're sitting there smoking a cig or chewing your nails.

Sounds like OCD, which can involve any sort of habit, simply some repetitive activity which makes you feel less anxious. I seriously suggest medical treatment and counselling, as OCD is a very serious, disabling condition which gets worse without treatment. [I speak from personal experience of a family member, and an acquaintance who's a compulsive hoarder.]

The suggestion of keeping a garden is a good idea for channeling your nervous energy, but it would not help in and of itself: it would simply become another expression of your compulsive behaviour.

Depends on the nature of the problem.Generally,Conditioning - both classical and Operant - techniques including Modeling has been used to change habits.Check with experienced Clinical psychologist,he will determine which one is better for you.
