Strange memory lapses?!

Question: I am 16 years, old, and at time I experience very strange memory lapses. For example, today, my girlfriend came over, and by the time I dropped her back off and got home, I had forgotten much of the day. I remembered key things such as going to my grandmothers and such, but my detailed memory is a blur.

Also, other times, I have been setting in my room and thought to myself I wanted to go to the kitchen and get something to drink and then suddenly I would be there, not remembering the walk. Often times, I will experience a day then go to sleep and the next day it seem like the day before was weeks ago, as I could not recall anything detailed.

I am a fairly busy person, so I don't know if this is normal or what, but it is just very strange my memory is so weak for my age. I don't think it is normal because just hours ago my girlfriend was over and I can't seem to recall any conversations or anything, just her being here and us starting a movie and then it ending.

It is probably one of a couple of things, none are too happy, but they are treatable.

You are either having 'black outs' due to drinking a bit too much, or...you are doing what is called, OH, jeez, I can't remember the term. but it means:

You go 'outside' of your personality, almost as if you lose your current personality and go into another. It's a form of multiple personality disorder where you disengage for periods of time during some sort of stress and forget what you have done. Perhaps you have an "alter ego", which is another part of you that handles things difficult; and then when you wake up or are less stressed your original personality comes back and you've forgotten what happened.

Perhaps you had some sort of abuse or psychological stress when you were younger that caused this, It is mostly considered psychological and not a medical condition (like Bipolar or schizophrenia...you are probably not that).

Therapy is the only way for you to determine if this is the case. Maybe something about being with your girlfriend makes you 'disengage' and become a different personality for a while.

Please, do some research on the Internet about Multiple Personality Disorder. It is NOT the same as Schizophrenia or Bipolar.

Get tested, it may be serious

It's hard to tell from your description what's causing this. There could be a neurological reason, but it could also be dissociation.

In any case, your symptoms are not normal. You need to get this checked out.

EDIT: Ah! Diane is talking about dissociative identity disorder (formerly called multiple personality disorder). I decided not to go into it, because dissociation can occur without somebody having DID. There is a whole category of dissociative disorders. It could be one of them, or it could be something else entirely.

Dissociation it is often sign that a trauma has been repressed. If you look it up, you'll find a lot about child abuse. Don't let yourself get too worried about that yet, just get it checked out. You'll feel better once you do.
