Why do memories fade away?!

Question: Why is it that after years pass memories fade away?

Answers: Why is it that after years pass memories fade away?

No you brain doesnt run out of room. Yes it does have a finite occupancy, yet it doesnt run out of room due to memories.

You dont forget your memories, you just never have them to begin with.

Your mind goes through seemingly tedious task's everday. You do the samethings almost everyday (pertaining to the same topic. i.e Get up, get coffee, use the computer) your brain only stores information it finds useful for future use.

It's not going store information about a Saturday afternoon 5 years ago because their was nothing useful nor purposeful done in that day that will effect you 5 years in the future.

Runs out of room..... that's funny.

because your brain fills up with new information every day so it runs out of room.

I don't know. I've forgotten.

cuz u get more memories from recent and the old is overcome by the new
basically the same thing the first person said

they dont they just get lost

Almost all memories are stored in "long-term storage" in the brain or "short-term storage". If they mean a lot, they will move from short term to long term.

The fact is, memories pretty much stay stored in your brain forever, if they move into 'long term storage". The difference is RECALL. Some people have INCREDIBLE recall of their memory storage bank. Some people have less recall.

No, your brain does not 'fill up". We barely use a minute portion of our brain for storage. There's so much room left it's not even funny. Yes, important memories may push out our recall. But don't you know someone who can remember the name of everybody in their 2nd grade class? They have great RECALL. The fact is, the information is also in your brain but you cannot recall it.

I think there are techniques you can do to improve your recall.
Memories that are logged before the age of 5 are usually not re-callable by an adult, because before that age most memories are logged in differently because our brains don't think like adults until age 5. This is all psychologically proven. You learn it in Psych 101 in college.

They're probably still in your subconscious. Sometimes you'll dream about a person you haven't seen for a really really long time or something similar due to this.

Some memories fade away because there is not enough emotion attached to them. Emotionally charged memories tend to stay very vivid.

they are there all right, you just need something to trigger them. i have had time's where all of a sudden something will remind me of something from years and years ago that you totally forgot about. just like some of the others said, it's in your sub-conscious.
