Benadryl to sleep through a flight?!

Question: I asked this question under the Parenting category, but I need some more answers. I have a 6 year old son with autism. He is very high functioning, which makes him very active, very talkative, and at times very hard to keep under control. We are moving overseas and are scheduled to take a 12-hour flight to Germany. Benadryl has been suggested to sedate him slightly. I feel horrible doing this, but with his behavior being unpredictable, I can't think of any other options. An overnight or evening flight won't work, as he has been known to keep himself awake for more than 36 hours rather than sleep in a place that was unfamiliar. Any suggestions?

Benedryl is a very good option to consider. It is actually an allergy medication.

Be warned, however. You may want to try this out once before you administer it. Some children (and adults) have paradoxical reactions to benedryl, and become slightly manic (not what you want on an overseas flight).

Prior to the flight (maybe a week or two in advance), test his reaction at home. I suggest administering a single dose just before bed on a weekend night (just in case he does have an odd, paradoxical reaction). If he sleeps well - go ahead and administer during the flight.

This is NOT something you need to feel the least bit guilty about. Benedryl is an allergy med. It happens to have the side effect of light sedation. It is not as if you're forcing this child to drink a bottle of whiskey. It will make the trip easier for him and easier for you.

Best of luck on your flight,
~M~

Have you asked his pediatrician? I would suggest that.

I really think you should speak to his doctor about this.

Ask his doctor. He knows his medical history and can make a recommendation.

You chug the botle so your not awake to feel sorry

damn gurl do u realize ur saying u wanna drug ur kid... what i reccomend is a warm glass of milk and an offering of toys if hes good for the duration of the flight!

have patients with him. do not drug your son. prepare him for the trip. it will pass

Just hit him with like half a unisom its for sleeping and benadryl is for allergies although it is supposed to make you sleepy.
If they got kids benadryl im sure he would be fine.. not a doctor though

melatonin is a good sleep "helper" it produces a natural chemicaal that helps you sleep

Benadryl is an allergy medication that only works as a mild sedative.
If you have an AUTISTIC CHILD

GIVE THE CHILD A TRANK.

You're just kidding yourself if you think that giving a child an antihistamine is going to keep the child calm enough to travel for TWELVE HOURS.

Give him a tranquilizer. Your inner peace is worth something isn't it?

Hang in there and good luck

See your general practitioner and see about a really mild sleep aid being prescribed. Some people have a drowsy feeling after they awaken using Benedryl as a sleep aid. There are prescription sleep aids that can help eliminate this side effect such as ambien or Halcion. Halcion is short acting and is designed to get you into a deeper sleep quickly and then wear off quickly. Ambien is a little more long term but it also has a shorter action than Benadryl.

Your best deal is to ask your Doctor. If you ply him with Benadryl or anything else like that, alcohol...... For a Serious thought, "you could not reconcile yourself" should there be a less than sought after affect. Also you can be done with aiding and abetting the delinquency of a minor.

Ask your doctor. Maybe he could prescribe a stronger sedative.

I think your best bet is to talk with his doctor. Yes, Benadryl does help to sleep but you need to know if it is okay for a 6 year old child and if there is something better. You have a reasonable request here.

I agree that you should speak with your doctor about it. About the guilt, well, I don't think you should feel guilty. As a person who moved overseas as a child, I can state very positively that this is a highly stressful thing for a child. And I didn't have Autism or ADD! As a parent of a child with ADHD I promise you that I would definately be prepared with something to help him sleep and relax. I am not very familiar with autistic children, but my ADHD son, would have the whole, entire plane stressed to the max and ready to bind and gag him if he wasn't somehow tamed. And his doctor has recommended Benadryl to him for a similar situation. For 12 hours though, I think you better see your doc for something a little longer lasting than that. I am sure as an adult who will also be stressed and apprehensive, the whole move would be easier for you all if you visit your doctor.
