Side effect advice?!

Question: I have been diagnosed with depression and prescribed 20mg Citalopram. The list of side effects is scary, and i'm unsure whether to actually take the medication or not. Has anyone else been prescribed this and did you experience any of the side effects? Did taking the medication actually help efter a while?

Hi there

The list of side effects are quite long, but you must remember, when you are part of a medicine trial group, this is now before the medicine gets registered for use, if you report that your big toe is itching, they have to include it in the list of possible side effects. Now it could be coincidental. Most people don't experience any side effects, and most of the side effects improve within a few days after you started the drug. I have used the drug before, and have not experienced any side effects. The meds with counseling saved my life, I was pretty depressed. You have to be patient though, it can take 4-6 weeks before you notice a real difference, but i think it is probably because the changes are so gradual, you sort of wake up one day, realizing you feel much better. If you have any doubts, discuss it with your doctor, or even better you are entitled to a second opinion. Good luck, and I hope you find the right solution for your situation!

Many patients experience minimal or no side effects whatsoever while on this medication. It is important to remember that listing of side effects include EVERY "side effect" reported during a clinical trial - many are entirely unrelated to the medication - yet they must be listed as possibilities.

Everyone responds differently to medication - including whether or not you experience side effects, and how intensely (if at all ) you experience them.

The first few days are typically adjustment days. You may get a little nausea or tiredness. These generally pass quickly as your body gets used to the medicine.

You need to allow at least a few weeks before therapeutic effectiveness will be noticeable.

Best of luck to you in your treatment,

medications effect all people differently. If your dr prescibed it take it and if you have an adverse reaction call your doc and get his/her advice. sometimes it will take a few tries before you find the med that works best for you, but you need to give them an honest shot to work

I take Escitalopram (Lexapro), Celexa's chemical cousin. Thus far after about a month the only side effect I have is dry mouth but it's livable. You need to give the medication about 4 - 6 weeks for the full effect to be known.
