Lexapro during pregnancy?!

Question: I would like to hear from anybody who has actually taken Lexapro or another SSRI while pregnant. (Obviously this excludes guys unless you're a doctor with knowledge about this). Did your baby have any side effects or problems?

To give you some background, I took Lexapro before becoming pregnant (10 mg) and got good results. I (slowly) stopped taking it before becoming pregnant. My anxiety started to return when I was 5 months pregnant (mostly due to marital problems) and my OBGYN gave me a prescription. I haven't even filled it yet because it makes me nervous (did I say I have anxiety LOL). The docs don't act like it's any big deal, but again, I get antsy about medications but I'm starting to REALLY feel like I need my pill.

I'm looking to hear from people with experience with an SSRI during pregnancy (or doctors who also know about this). Simply telling me how crappy you think it is unless you've actually been there done that is not what I'm looking for.

Thanks much!!!!

Hey! Congrats on the pregnancy!

I took 10mg of Lexapro on a daily basis from three months pregnant up until my son was six months old....He is perfectly healthy and there were no problems. My OB GYN practice said that many of their patients take SSRI's during pregnancy and they have not once had a problem. The practice that I went to is one of the top OB/GYN's in the state of New Jersey.

I did a ton of research on the use of SSRI's (lexapro in particular) before I decided to take it during pregnancy and I came to the conclusion that I thought it was safe and I new that my son would be better off without a very depressed mother.

You know how bad your condition is that you want to treat so you need to decide whether or not taking Lexapro is worse than the condition itself. For me, I had never taken an antidepressant in my life but I ended up with antenatal depression and really needed something for it. Antenatal depression is similar to postpartum depression but it starts during pregnancy rather than after...also, you are at much greater risk of getting PPD if you get antenatal depression.

I don't regret taking the Lexapro at all and I know that I was a better mother for choosing to take it....it helped me out so so much. My son is now 19 months old and perfectly healthy!!

Email me if you have any questions...

I took Lexapro from six months pregnant up to delivery and I am still taking the generic form and breastfeeding right now

i took paxil for the first few months of pregnancy.
i weened myself off for the last 2/3rd of pregnancy... but after i had my daughter went back on

i did a LOT of research on it, talked to my lactation support and found out they had a great book on it...

i think different anti-depressants affect the fetus and newborn differently. talk to your obgyn about your specific concerns. and get a second opinion if you are uncomfortable with hr answers...

I took Lexapro during my pregnancy w/ my 4th child, see is just fine. I do not recommend Paxil or anything other than Lexapro. I took Paxil w/ my 2nd child and am now in a lawsuit w/ that company due to problems she is going through.
I know how you feel. I hated the idea of taking anything, especially after that. But I assume you need it just like I did and Lexapro is a much better combination, I did the research and spoke w/ several MD's .
