Why do I get the urge to eat when I'm upset?!

Question: When I feel overwhelmed by stress or I feel really upset or angry, I get the urge to just eat junk food.

I usually take really good care of myself and watch what I eat but when I get upset... I just eat and eat. I don't even want the things, but I eat them anyway and sometimes start crying too.
Gosh.. what's up with me?

You're self-medicating with food. Certain foods (especially junk food) contains endorphins that act to calm you. Even the familiar chewing motion can be a comforting ritual. It's all about soothing yourself and trying to cope with your problems. Exercise also releases endorphins, so the next time you feel like binging on junk food, try grabbing a glass of water and jogging for a while. There's even something called "runner's high" that's similar to the feeling you can get from certain foods.

Lots of people eat when they're sad and then they get fat. I'm not sure exactly why but I was watching some show about meth I think and it said that meth releases these chemicals in your brain that make people happy, but i forgot what they were called =/ But it said that other things also released these chemicals like sex and food and other stuff so I guess that's why you eat when you're sad.

Edit* Okay now I remember they're called endorphines

You are self medicating and you are finding comfort in eating. I agree with the other member. Drink a glass of water and take a walk. It might help you.

Good luck!
