Stop taking Celexa?!

Question: I am bipolar. I take Lamictal for mood swings and Celexa for anxiety.

I have gained a TON of weight since taking the Celexa, and my doctor said that Celexa is known for causing significant weight gain. She told me to call her if I wanted her to switch it to something else that will help with the weight.

I called her, and she told me that she won't switch it until I go to some therapy sessions.

I work midnights, take care of my one year old all day, and only sleep for a couple of hours when my husband gets home from work. I don't have time for therapy, as shitty as it sounds.

So I'm thinking of weaning myself off of the Celexa slowly. I know I shouldn't, but I can't handle this weight gain!

Anybody have any experience with stopping Celexa?

Klonopin is a better drug for anxiety. It isn't an antidepressant, so it will not change your weight. If there is any way you can get more sleep that may help you more than anything else. Lack of sleep is known to cause weight gain and anxiety. You are right about how you should get off of Celexa. It should not be hard if you do it slowly.

I stopped taking celexa about two years ago. My doctor prescribed zoloft instead of Celexa for anxiety.

It is very hard to stop a medication like Celexa just because of it's helpfulness with anxiety. I did gain weight with both medications but have been able to maintain since then. The social anxiety part is what is keeping on the Zoloft.

Good Luck with whatever you choose to do. I would ask your doctor though before starting or stopping any medication, especially the ones for mental health
