Living with Bi-Polar sister, how do I handle her?!

Question: How can I effectively restrain her when she gets off her medicine and starts hitting me

Answers: How can I effectively restrain her when she gets off her medicine and starts hitting me

Since ya live with your sister...you're most likely a teen, right?

She should NOT be going off of her meds.
Your parents need to solve that problem and make sure she doesn't.

Reason why is because bipolars without being properly treated, there's a 20% suicide rate...and if they don't do that...they'll have a psychotic break (mostly people with type I)

Do you actually need to restrain her? If not..then don't do it cause that's why she hits you.

You need to call 911 if she hits you again...
Not to get assault charges, but to send an ambulance over and take her to either the ER or a psych ward. I know it would be hard to do that to a family member, especially a sibling....but its for her own safety...and obviously yours.

she gets mad because she's going through a manic episode.

Is she cycling pretty fast?
Or does she have her moments of being leveled out (being like you and content...well, in other words...seeming like she is okay)

If she DOES have her controlled moments, tell her she needs to go to a psych immediately because she shouldn't go off of the medicine.

Is it because she says she feels sick and zombie-like? Then she's probably on Lithium or Depatoke...or however you spell it.

she should get on "Lamictal"
Since she is young, it'll help her more than anything else because Lamictal is prescribed to most young people...mostly because it doesn't have side effects, no weight gain, and its for long term use. I take it and have for a year, I'm 17... my moods before I was diagnosed were often mania because I was always soo pissed. Even got into a fight. When the stupid doc listened to my mom instead of me, he put me on an antidepressant and it caused me a minor psychosis...

Obviously your sister is going through psychosis because bipolar people normally aren't abusive like that unless they are going through psychosis and then they become a little violent (but NOT killers...I'm a lover not a killer!) so yeha, now that I think about it you need to call 911 RIGHT when she starts to get mad. Tell the operator that she is bipolar and went off her meds and she's going through psychosis because she's violent.

But your parents need to be involved in this. I have three sisters...and I know that its hard to live with me when I cycle...but trust me, its harder to live with it while your the person with it. When she goes into depression, she wiill feel guilty she hurts you.

But seriously you need to get the authorities to take her t get sedated. They'll put her on suicide watch I'm sure...

Email me if you need more questions answered, k? Ill be glad to help....cause I wasn't even diagnosed until a year later of having it...and it'll get a lot worse if she is NOT on medicine.

After she gets help...and stays in a psych ward for a week or so...definitely take her to a psychiatrist and get her on Lamictal(or your parents do it)

I cannot stress enough about the importance of being on meds. Plus, it makes everything worse when a person goes cold turkey on meds.

If you're being physically attacked by her, you should get the assistance of police authorities. Have her taken in and tell them of her mental illness, but file charges as this is likely the only way that she'll get the treatment she needs (forcibly if necessary as the state will compel treatment) and to show her that you will not tolerate being attacked.

This is tough love for sure, but in the long run, it will be better for her and your relationship with her.

good luck

tell someone in the family, maybe they can help and she should be on her meds

yuh g tta tell her to calm downn!!

You should not be in that situation , your parents should be handling that , mabey they are not doing their job or just do not care. They need to wake up and smell the coffee.

If you do call the police which is probably the best thing you can do for her, be sure to tell the cops that it is a 5150 which is a cop term for dealing with someone who has a mental illness. In order for her to be hospitilized though, she must be harmful to herself or others. That can be something as simple as not eating and taking care of herself or if she attacks you in any way. As you know staying on her meds is the key for someone to live a normal happy life.
