Anti-psychotic drugs...does anyone take these? how do these drugs improve your d!

Question: The first time I took zyprexa it was like someone had cleaned my 'mental windows'. I could actually think straight for the first time in years. It was a lovely feeling of peaceful mental clarity, not a manic revelation, just peace and the ability to think.

I started a university course, and did well, and enjoyed the sensation of actually being in charge for me, rather than perpetually being over-run by thoughts.

But then - of course - I thought I was better, and I came off them. idiot.

And when I took them again, they just made me sleepy.

I'd never take drugs unless I had no choice, but it can be hard honey though I'd say you'd be better off without them. Once you start them, it really is quite difficult to lose your dependency.

i actually tried them yesturday. One called Abilify. I gave me an intense panic attack and i ended up having to go back to my doctor and sitting there tell i could calm down. This though is just how it effected me, it could be different for you. But overall what these do is calm you down alot, they keep you from over thinking and also help with schizophrenia.

Also these arent as addicting as people try and say. The anti psychotic drugs arn't even classified as addicting. The anti depressent ones are indeed.

i dont agree with the bottom answer of it being difficult to stop them. all drugs of this type, your dr will wean u off slowly so as to not suffer side effects such as headaches, nausea etc etc. They affect people in diff ways. since they work on different parts of the brain, they usually are beneficial and usually take a several weeks to build up in your system in order for you to start noticing a real change. Some experience uncomfortable side effects that usually go away after a week or two.

I've taken Abilify, and now I take Zyprexa.

For the information of the first poster - neither of these drugs are addictive.
Abilify didn't do much for me.

Zyprexa has calmed me down a lot, and stops me from becoming manic. It's also got rid of most of my anxiety, and I'm sleeping much better.

No antipsychotic is a wonder drug, that works perfectly without any side effects, but once you find one, it can have a very positive impact on your life.

I've been on them for nearly 2 years now. I stil have thoughts of self-harm and suicide so in that respect it hasnt really changed things but am I still here cos' I take them, who knows!!

At the risk of offending anyone, I agree that if at all possible, don't become a customer of drug companies. I had terrible depression but I saw a counsellor rather than a doctor, and I haven't needed drugs.

It took me three tries to find an anti-psychotic that works for me with tolerable side effects. I take it with a couple other meds to stabilize my bipolar disorder and it helps organize my thoughts and keep them from being overwhelmingly negative. I wasn't content and stable until I found the anti-psychotic bit of my cocktail, but as people have said, everyone reacts differently to them, so what works for one person won't necessarily work for another.

i had post natal after my first child and anti psycotic drugs did not help infact i think they made me feel worse. i had to be taken off them.

no don't take any drugs so i don't know if they could improve my day to day life, i don't even like taken aspirin.

If I were you I would NEVER take any anti-psychotic drugs, or for that matter any pschoactive drugs. They don't solve the problems your experiencing. Once you start taking them, you'll be reliant on them. I've read reports of people who took them can't stand them, "often these people have to admit themselves to a mental hospital because they can't handle the side effects. I had a friend who took anti-psychotic drugs, I believe they caused him to have mental break downs. He would stop taking his meds, I was on a field trip with him, he would run off without telling anyone. He acted really insane, he would yell act like different people devils ect.like someone possessed. They had to take him away, to this day I don't know what happened to him. Before you make a final decision on whether or not you still think you need these drugs, or even something like a minor tranqualizer for generalized anxiety, here is a website to consider:http://psychiatrykills.tripod.com/index2...

I have been taking Seroquel for a few years.
I does a good job helping me sleep.

You should only use antipsychotics under medical supervision. The reason they're prescribed is because of psychosis. For example the person needing them has some illness in which (s)he imagines certain things that just aren't true & this affects their quality of life & ability to relate to other people. Unfortunately many people who need them refuse to take them because they don't believe they're imagining all this stuff, & so they have to be sectioned under the Mental health acts so that they can be compelled to take medication.
If you need antipsychotic drugs, they will seriously improve the quality of your life. If you don't need them, most of them have some unpleasant side effects & you'll want to come off them quick.
The question to ask yourself is whether life as a whole was better before taking the antipsychotics or after. For example, were there things in life that hurt you or made you afraid that no longer bother you after taking the drugs for a few months?Or were there people constantly following you that no longer do so?
It's that sort of change that antipsychotic drugs can bring about.

Im on orlazapine and it helps me stabalize my bipolar
it stop the voices, helps me sleep and really controls my mania. However i wish i didnt have to take them as they really kill your emotions so you feel nothing
