Depression, maybe worse?!

Question: So i'm 17, i've been depressed for about a year, it's been slowly getting worse and worse. I use to cry several times a day until about a month ago. I'm still depressed, but I don't let people see it anymore, I really am just trying to ignore my depression. That might not make much sense, but it's the only way i can explain it. So lately, out of nowhere (ill be watching TV or talking online or something), I will start crying uncontrollably, sometimes for an hour, sometimes for only 5 minutes (happens maybe every other day). When this happens it feels like my chest is going to collapse and sometimes I have trouble breathing. I have always been an emotional person, but it's never been this bad. Also, I have been getting mad extremely easy at almost everything, i'm also very easily frustrated. Could I be Bipolar? Or just depressed?

you are most likely stressed. depression and stress go hand in hand, but having the mentall illness "depression" is a different thing. Your a teenager, teenagers are emotional. This is just a phase that you'll get through eventually.

I recommend though taking some time to yourself to think what might be stressing you out so much. Are you falling behind in school? Is the girl you like stressing you, parent problems? Etc.

What your feeling though with this stress is anxiety, this is common with stress and can eventually lead to panic attacks. What you need to do when your feeling this chest pain and can't breath is to re assure yourself that your ok, breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. Not deep breaths, normal breaths, just slow your heart rate down.

Find a friend to talk to about your stress, or write down how you feel, this will help alot. Its ok to be stressed sometimes, its part of life to feel this way. You seem to be letting stress overcome you, just do like i suggested and take some time to your self. Close you eyes and imagine a giant trash can, take all your thoughts that stress you out think about them. Solve your problems in your head then drag them into that trash can.

Hope this helps man, good luck.

Also, thanks allot to everyone else. Report It

  • This sounds a lot like stress to me.Stress can effect your body in many different ways. It's can make you physically sick, VERY emotional(depressed, sad, scared, ect..)It can even make you shut out all emotions and gives you a feeling of numbness(you feel no emotion at all).I know it seems like a hopeless act but pray and be patient.I know patients can be the hardest thing to accomplish when depressed. Also try and find something that you enjoy doing like writing, drawing, singing, ect...Hope this helps

You have been suffering for a long time. The best thing you can do is to see your doctor and describe your symptoms just as you have done here so brilliantly. Try not to worry too much at this stage about what the problem might be. Depression and bipolar illness can both be treated effectively. If you need drugs (and you may not) hen it may mean trying several before you find one that works.

I will be thinking of you :-)

It sounds to me like depression, and possibly anxiety, which go hand in hand. And the feeling you get when crying definitely sounds like panic attacks. You shouldn't ignore it, it will only get worse. Talk to your parents about what's going on. I know it can be hard to do, but this is about your life. Don't be embarassed about it, you can't help it. It's just how you are.You should go see a therapist and possibly a psychologist who can perscribe something to help you. I've been through all of this before, get help before things get worse.
