Bipolar II disorder?!

Question: People often confuse BP II with BP I because they know less about it. But what are the main characteristics of BPII?
And if you have been diagnosed or know some one who has been diagnose do you agree with your doctors decision?
Also do you notice any difference in your mood with your medication?

Hi,

I am bipolar II. Bipolar II indicates predominent depression and absense of florid manias (psychosis, especially.) Our highs and lows are less extreme than BP I, and hypomanias take place of manias for the most part. That being said, the depression and maniacal factors can combine into a nasty state called a mixed episode- aka HELL.

Yes, I agree with my doctors. I told them they were wrong, that they knew nothing, that I wasn't mentally ill, for quite a while after first being diagnosed. I realized how much more level and tolerable life became on medication, and that's when it began to make sense. I have had some sh-tty episodes when quitting my meds unexpectedly or during med changes, which made me recognize that I am functional on meds and dysfunctional without...

Yes, the meds do stabilize my mood A LOT. Too much, actually... I live and breathe abstraction and creativity, and the mood stabilizers can numb everything up. It's hard not to miss the dynamic way of life when you stunt it with meds, but when you drop the meds and return to chaos, you suddenly remember that with the highs come the lows, and the low lows, and the puking-your-guts-out-in-the-E.R.-lows.

If you want a tolerable, enjoyable life, get with, and STICK WITH the meds. I'm a hypocrite, but I think I also enjoy self-deprecation as I try to figure out an opportune time to check out.
