What do I do about depression? Are drugs the only way to get over it?!

Question: Think of treating depression like a pie wherein each slice represents a different method of help. Prescribed drugs are just one piece of the pie. Counseling is crucial. Taking meds only will not help you understand why your depressed and they will not help you create a plan to lift yourself out of depression. Please see a good therapist.

Family/friends support is another piece of that pie. If you've got a good support system, use them. You'd help them if they needed it, right?

Hobbies, excercising, joining groups whether it's a church group or some kind of club etc... are also great tools to pull you out of you. Does that make sense?

I think if you simultaneously try to heal yourself using all of these venues, you'll find that the end result will be far greater than taking meds alone. I urge you to get help. Do not give up on yourself. Fight the urge to want to crawl into that place and do nothing.

There is a place in all of us, no matter where we are, to know that life inherently, is good. Hold onto that hope. Many of us go through periods of depression or other hardships. Please get help. Your worth it!

There are a lot of ways to battle depression besides medication: talk therapy, support groups, self-help books, online support groups, hypnotherapy or self-hypnosis, writing in a journal, exercise, etc.

It may seem overwhelming and hard to figure out where to start. A mental health professional can help you develop strategies (without medication, if you're against that) to fit you and your needs in getting control on your depression.

If it is mild, than waiting it out could work. If you have it sever enough than medicine for a while can help.

try doing crafts

pray/meditate
figure out why you're depressed and find songs that talk about it.
for me: Linkin Park "Numb" and Green Day "Boulevard of Broken Dreams"
When I know that these people went through the same stuff but are still successful it helps. A lot.

DONT TRY TO WAIT IT OUT

No! Drugs aren't the only way to get over it. You can talk to somebody about it like a therapist.

it all depends how long you have felt depressed and what effect it is having on your life.if it is severe and you have tried lifestyle changes and it is still really affecting everyday life then i would say meds because you could have a chemical imbalance and meds can put this right.if you just feel a bit low and havent tried any lifestyle changes then i would look at that.
