Is mental illness such as schitzophrenia and bipolar hereditary?!

Question: They both can be hereditary, but that is less than a 50/50 chance on both.

Answers: They both can be hereditary, but that is less than a 50/50 chance on both.

Schizophrenia specifically does seem to have a strong genetic component (this is far from a guarantee that if one of your parents had it you will, but it does put you at a higher risk). There is not good evidence (that I am aware of) for other mental illnesses.

There is a clear and definite link. Good luck if it is in your family.

Studies suggest that genetics, early environment, neurobiology and psychological and social processes are important contributory factors. Current psychiatric research is focused on the role of neurobiology, but a clear organic cause has not been found. Due to the many possible combinations of symptoms, there is debate about whether the diagnosis represents a single disorder or a number of discrete syndromes. Diagnosis is based on the patient's self-reported experiences and observed behavior. No laboratory test for schizophrenia exists.

There have been studies that reveal that these conditions tend to run in families, but I don't know that they have hard proof on inheritance of the condition itself..

well, my grandfather was a little bit crazy, but I am all right. I know I am, cuz I was diagnosed many times. so, there is still hope that everything will be all right

I dont know much about bipolar but schizophrenia has some evidence for being partly genetic...

People from a non-schizophrenic background have a 1 in 100 chance of developing. However, if one of your parents is schizophrenic, you have a 1 in 5 chance. If BOTH your parents suffer from schizophrenia, your chances increase to about a 1 in 3 chance of having it too.

But all studies have shown that its only PARTLY genetic. Often, if you inherit the 'schizophrenia-gene', it needs to be triggered by an environmental factor (eg. extreme stress or drugs) it actually begins to take affect. So even if you have inherited it, it doesnt mean you will actually have it.

Hope that makes sense! :)

Don't believe it is hereditary but possibly a tendency toward it.
