Why do some people enjoy watching animals or other people suffer and die?!

Question: I know that there are a lot of people out there who get off on watching suffering and death, and I just don't understand it! There are people who get off on seeing other people die in the most horrible ways in the "Faces of Death" videos. Not only that, but there are also a lot of sick people out there who enjoy watching bullfights, cockfights, and dog fights. Just a couple of days ago, through my own negligence, I ran over a dog with my car. The poor thing was still alive when I got out of my car to check on him. I tried to get help for him, but it was a futile effort, because his injuries were too severe. I still think of how he suffered! I remember seeing the blood run from his nostrils and his mouth! I also remember hearing him yelp and then wheeze as he struggled to breathe! Since I have the memory of that poor dog's suffering so fresh in my mind, I really have to ask how anyone can enjoy watching something or someone suffer and die. Can anyone explain it?

People have ALWAYS liked violence as a population though - look back at the gladiator fights and the plethora of wars. People in general don't keep their sadistic ways only reserved for animals! There is a part of us, that in time can become desensitized to any violence.

With animal suffering they view animals as different or separate from people and they look at animals for sport. Look at our culture, we are generally very desensitized - I mean people eat meat, and don't care where it comes from or how the animals are treated.... then they get all upset about cock fighting or bill fighting etc. It's the nature of the beast. Some will say that fighting animals is not the same as eating them, but to me it's not. It's all animal cruelty. It's just gross! I personally think it is all sick and often find myself asking this same question.

people watch those things because they are sick.
they are so disgusting. i think it is so sad

Because they're sadists. And often psychopathic. I usually try to give better answers that aren't as biased, but honestly, that's all I can think of.

That's the sinful nature of the humankind. Some of us came aware and become sensible person other don't care and become calloused or hard hearted people.
Thanks be to God that we don't live here eternal and this is temporal.
Be God be with you all the road.

Awe i feel so bad for you that you had to go through seeing that dog die . The people that like to see torture are sick mentally . I know there are mental illness that make these people feel that way.

Tasnin's right. They're sick. There are a lot of videos and movies and tv shows that should just be banned because they serve no good purpose.

But . . .

I think what people are doing is taking their minds off their own problems by focussing on other people's problems.

It's time for corporate Americans to stop exploiting our worst impulses and interests and start trying to be some kind of positive influence.

Sick videos don't necessarily make people sick, but I'm sure they don't help.

I feel your pain. I hit a chipmunk once when I was first learning to drive, and I cried for days.

I think the reason is that people are clearly becoming increasingly violent, inhuman and sadistic.

These days the media and the government especially seem to extol such behavior,.... like it's trait of a "True American."

There is nothing American or remotely human about torturing and murdering to get your jollies. Those are the traits of a mentally diseased, regressing animal.

God only knows what the cause is, though I blame the vitamin and nutrient devoid abomination that is the Standard American Diet and the increasing degradation of the environment.
The lax censorship of the media and entertainment industries, under the guise of the first amendment, is no help either. It's adding gasoline to the bonfire.

one theory is that if a person is SEVERLY neglected, not shown any affection, as a very small child or baby, then they don't learn how to sympathize, empathize or make an emotional connection with other creatures/people
They don't know how to imagine what the other person or that cat they killed might feel.

You are right all the way. People who enjoy the suffering and possible death of other sentient beings, have some cork unscrewed in their heads. May we have lives far, far away from them,.
