Hi there - Everyone is different, but generally it is fine to take both SSRIs and anti-anxiety meds. If you trust your doctor, remember that he or she went through a LOT of education to be able to come to the conclusion that that's what you need.

The thing that I would be most concerned about is dependence and drowsiness. Many anti-anxiety meds are barbituates, which can be addictive and make you very sleepy, but you really just don't know until you take them. Plus, sometimes a good night's sleep is really, really good for your anxiety!

If you aren't feeling depressed, you might not need the SSRI also. I'm not sure about that one... Those sound like pretty low doses, which would make sense if you're just starting out on them (they see how it's working and adjust up as needed) I've found in my personal experience that combinations of different types of meds (safely of course!) works much better than taking only one. I used to take Clonopin for anxiety and Effexor for depression, but I felt like I was dependant on the Clonopin so I weaned myself off it and now a benadryl or an Ambien at night does the trick nicely. The best thing I did though for my anxiety, which I've had since I was a little kid, was change the thing in my life that was making me most anxious. (I bet the big drug co's wouldn't want you to know that though!)

Anyhoo, if you think it will help you feel better, and you aren't planning on getting pregnant asap or boozing it up a lot while you're on the meds (pills and booze do NOT mix) What do you have to lose? It's worth a try if the anxiety is getting to be a real problem for you.

Zoe

i take them and i haven't even been diagnosed with anything.

Take them if you feel that you truly need them. If you really have extreme anxiety and depression, medication can improve your life heaps... if you think its just mild, therapy might work out better for you. Anti-Anxiety/depression medications can be very damaging and more trouble than its worth for people who dont really need it.

These new CLASS of drugs have very little side effects.I think you might have some luck and it could not hurt to try them for a short time. You need to be on most meds a month or so, before you can get full effect and see if it will help you or not.GOOD LUCK.

Most SSRI's also combat anxiety symptoms. Anxiety is not always constantly present in people diagnosed with anxiety disorders. I have been on a combo of an SSRI and various anti anxiety meds for more than twenty years. I can definitely tell the difference, even though I didn't believe I needed the meds in the first place.
