I answered a subsequent question from you about your daughter and her possible schizophrenia or Bi Polar. Your description here is more thorough and again does not sound like schizophrenia but extreme Clinical Depression. I am not a psychiatrist though and ONLY a trained psychiatrist using the criteria of DSM-IV TR can make a diagnosis of a psychosis. She needs help that is evident. I am so concerned by the seeming epidemic of teen depression and suicide in the USA.

As far as financial support a diagnosis is probably necessary before such an application can be made with the Social Security System. States have many facilities to diagnose and care for a patient who is indigent and get them started on a regimen of treatment. Contact your state mental health dept. There numbers can be found in the community services section of the telephone book.

As for her future, that is dependent on her getting help and getting on medications and psychotherapy. She is young. I was 28 and working when the first symptoms appeared. It took years to get help but once the VA got me in their system the med's. and psychotherapy (which in my estimation are even more important than medications) kicked in and things began to get back to normal.

Good luck with your getting help, Good mental health, peace and Love!

No! Stop the cycle! get her in therapy and save SSI for those who have paid into it!

I believe anything is possible. My son has schizoaffective disorder and takes his meds. He is able to work sometimes and at the moment he has a girlfriend. He struggles a great deal and has quite a few failed relationships, so we don't know how successful he will be in his life. One thing is for certain, if your daughter has bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, she needs to be treated and medicated. From the support group we attend and talking to other families whose relatives have these illnesses , without fail, medication is a necessity and the key to getting better. There are side affects, some very difficult, but the alternative is not what you want. She's tried to kill herself, so she needs help badly. If SSI means Social security benefits I have no idea what's required to get those. My son is on a disability payment support, but we don't live in the States. If you feel she needs financial support, or you need the money to help her then you should go ahead and apply. More importantly, make sure she gets the medical help she needs right away. I know how desperate you must feel, so you do what it takes for financial and mental help. Best wishes to you.

My son is also very intelligent, honours in everything and a musician, but IQ has nothing to do with bipolar or schizophrenia. These illnesses rob them of their ability to cope.
