What is black and white thinking?!

Question: It's when you either see something in one way or another - extremes of thinking e.g. everything is so wonderful or everything is so crap, nothing goes right etc. Another example would be "I love him with all my heart" or "I hate him with every fibre of my being".
There is no grey thinking or maybes. It's one extreme or the other.

i think it is when you either take one side of the other and you don't see the picture clearly

I have to keep a 4.0, or I'm dropping out of high school.

If I'm not 110 lbs., I'm obese.

I'm either rich or poor.

it is when you have views that only allow you to take info in one way....

It's when you can't think in colour....Everything you think about is grey.

It's either one way.
or the other.

ex:
you love me.
or hate me.
no in between.

When someone thinks only in extremes and is unable to see there might be something in between (the 'grey' area)
Such as:
If I don't look like a supermodel, I must be hideous.
I'm not 5'10, so I must be extremely short.

Black and white thinking is an opinion that its either right or wrong. No inbetween. No weighing up right or wrong. No discussion. Just an opinion that its either right or wrong. Black and white thinking in my opinion is not good. We all need an inbetween, we all need to find out a happy medium where we can agree, a sort of agreement between two parties, that neither are right or wrong, to agree to dissagree!

the glass is either half empty or half full, not just half way.

Black and white thinking is when a person can only think of one extreme or another. This person can not think about complex issues or 'grey" areas.

For example.
A person with black and white thinking may think, "Sadam Hussein was a bloody dictator. Therefore, the war in Iraq is good."
A person with grey thinking may think, "Sadam Hussein was a bloody dictator, but the war in Iraq is still wrong."

An example that might exist in mental health:
Black and white thinking:
"I raised my voice and disciplined my child unfairly. That means I am a horrible mother."
Normal, "grey" thinking:
"I raised my voice and disciplined my child unfairly. That means I made a mistake, but I am still a good mother."

get it?

Black and white thinking is usually done at night with the lights turned off. This allows the brain to focus on it's own internal white-light, or what is sometimes called "white space".

White thinking is also the complete opposite ot wong thinking, which usually gets us all in a jam if we're not careful.

Black and white issues were clearly understood by the Late [Republican] John Wayne who usually answered most questions with this own home-spun slogan of "Why the hell not".

Hope that clears up the issue of black and white with black/white thinking thing think!

It is either good or bad. It is either right or wrong. One side is black and the other is white........The things is that all the stuff in the middle is gray( that is what you get when you mix black and white) Some people don't see the grays in life? Some people can't see past the question to all the possible variables, they just say it is good or bad; it is right or wrong; with out getting into it. I hope this answers your question, but honestly I am curious as to why you asked.

The easiest way for me to think about black and white is really in the court room. Too much Law and Order? Anyway.
A black and white situation would be where the accused is either innocent or guilty without a doubt.

Let's say he was innocent. There's proof to back up 100% that the accused was nowhere near the crime scene at the time of the incident. Hooray!

But there's another area, called the "gray" area. You can associate when someone would refer to something as shady. An example of this would be if someone found evidence showing the previous "innocent" was actually speaking to members who took part in the incident. So now it's not clear that it's black and white. It's not clear if he's innocent or guilty. He might be either way. It's in the gray.

So now you know what the term 'black and white' is, hopefully a bit more clearly. Now let's go to black and white thinking.
When you think black and white you think opposites like always and never like seeing everything in extremes.

If it's not sure he's "innocent" then he must be "guilty". If things aren't "perfect," then they must be "horrible." If your child isn't "brilliant" then he must be "stupid." If you're not "fascinating" then you must be "boring."

It is a concept within cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). CBT teaches you to try to not use black and white thinking, that is to say not to look at the picture totally one way or another - but to look at the shades of grey in the middle.

it's depends on what you are meaning. Whether you mean in color or like an individual who is straight forward or something like a legal term of black or white. or just on paper.

A lot of issues are not so clear. It could be possible to see the positives of each side. Black and white is right and wrong. There is no gray. I think there is gray in some issues.
