Is happiness unrealistic and that's why so many people THINK they are depres!

Question: Society tells us all we should be thin, beautiful, celebrity, big-boobed, rich, happy, sun-tanned, fulfilled, etc. If we are not then there must be something wrong with us.
Surely this is why so many people feel anxiety, depression, failures - because they are not living up to the horrible media-new-white-slave-world? Shouldn't we just give ourselves a break?

We have all lost the plot. The media tells us and our children that we cant live without this and that, we should dress a certain way, be a certain size. Now most people actually believe this.
The happiest times that my children (now adults) had, were when we had literally nothing.
I had moved to a house and we had no furniture, not even a bed to sleep on. We made it into an adventure. I still live in the house that we moved too, and a lot of my sons friends often visit. We have fond memories of when we all went out on "Picnics". I just put any food that I had at the time in a bag and off we went. Anywhere.
Ask children to do that now and they would think that you were crazy. Parks are so boring because of "sue me" culture that they no longer attract childen to play there. We dress our very young children like mini adults. We are told that we need TV's DVD's etc. If you don't have them, somehow you feel that you are missing out.
I have a TV only because I was given one by my sister, I didn't have one for years, and I hardly watch the damn thing. My best friend bought me a CD player for my birthday, so that I could replace my vynl records (I still play them).
I know that I'm waffling, but what I'm trying to say is that we don't need stuff to make us happy. We don't need to be a clone from some magazine. I make me happy. I still have very little, I don't have the money to have a lot. My mother bought me this computer as a thank you, and I enjoy it all the more for that. I take my Grandchildren on long walks. Picnics. and we bake pies and cakes with friut that we pick ourselves. As they got older they have said that these are some of the best times that they have had. Most ot it had for free. We as a society have lost the art of making our own happiness. If it's not "laid" on then people seem to feel they are missing out.
Happiness comes from within and people have lost that.
I think that EVERYONE should turn off their tellies/radio/computer's at least one day a week and do something else, visit a friend you haven't seen for ages, a relative. Or read that book. Go to a coffee shop and sit in the window and watch the world go by. Whatever. Spend one night making your own happiness, with your family if you have one, if like me you are on your own, find a something that you have been meaning to do but never "had the time".
We rely so much on "things" to make us happy, when happiness is right under our very noses already. That's why so many people feel depressed.

Not really, its what we are taught "happiness" is suppose to be. But I agree alot of people just are throwing their own little pity party, they need to get over it.

yes, I hate the media and their idea of beauty. it use to make me feel so bad about myself. now i know better, and don't really care what other people think.
But many people are very impressionable!

There may be something in it. People honestly should not care what media think - they live in a different world. Everybody's got their own way of happiness. Some want to be rich, some want to be famous and some are happy living an "average" life, as long as they are with the right person.

see, this is why i say most normal people are ignorant.
people don't THINK they are depressed, they're depressed.
i'm bipolar and have ADHD, and no. i don't think i do
because of the media. i don't listen to what the media ssays.

the only time i listen to what they say is if they're telling people that people wiht mental disorders are natural born killers and need to be looked down upon. because of idiots that shoot people, i cannot work as a law enforcer.

i was a good kid before 9th grade. one of those struggling ones with ADHD and ALWAYS playign sports. always outside during the summer, never waning to sit inside all day. very happy boy. but 9th grade rolled in, freaking manic episodes left to right. i didn't choose to act that way, in fact, come time for 10th grade last year, had to go to a diff school cause my parents refused to let me go toa private school if i'll just screw around....and i became VERY VERY depressed because it was pretty scary...dont know why, but it was. no, it wasn't because it hought i was depressed. i didn't even know i was at the time.

so sorry bud, but most people with mental disorders do not even know until it gets so bad that more people are noticing or they finally get the fact they need help.

just because of my disorders, i do NOT feel like i am a failure. i'm very proud of myself and my accomplishments within the last year. i have improved and i have GREAT grades [lowest on the 1st sem report was a 91] my girlfriend and i have finally settled down again [2 year relationship, sadly she's seen me at my worst a year ago..]
i know i'm better than most celeb **** ups.
i don't drink, i don't do drugs, i don't smoke.
i'm a good kid, i'm very smart and creative, i know it's not just some thing in my head. i know it's real. i know it's scary thinking i am so young and i have dealt with something no teen should ever go through.

so shove that up your ***. society isn't why i have problems.
DNA. maybe you should research, then laugh at yourself for being so ignorant.

dude you are soo right. I try and like people for who they are...it's unrealistic...It's like they want you to be a certain way or they will begin to put you in your place- but really they are the scared ones( of thier own selves). they are so ******* fake that they need to put other people down in order to feel good.. It's so ******* lame and I can spot one of the ******* from 5 miles away. Just let people be who they wanna be ...like when columbine happened....everyone was so worried about bulling. Shouldn't we have been worried about that **** a long time ago ...dumbfucks.?.Also those kids wanted fame and revenge...and no one saw the so blantant signs. Reading there journals and basement tapes....I cna't think of anything more sad or disturbing I have every read in my life. .and also individuality is hot..Society has rotted our brains. The warped up white old dudes made it that way, in order to sell products ,and try to have complete control ,and yet they wonder why everyone feels bad about being themselves?
