Did you suffer from loss of short-term memory following a traumatic event?!

Question: I did and still do to some extent: I couldn't remember a phone number long enough to dial it. I couldn't finish a sentence, I forgot the names of lots of things, I forgot what I was doing all the time, forgot people I had met ENTIRELY - no face recognition, nothing.

I couldn't read a book as I'd forget what I had already read and couldn't follow a plot. I also forgot how to spell common words, although I had been a near- perfect speller before.

Have you had a similar experience?

Yes. When you are stressed enough, your short-term memory can short-circuit on you.. But be aware that if your short-term memory is short-circuiting, so is your immune system. Take extra special care of yourself.
When my boyfriend committed suicide, I would find myself standing in a room with no idea how I got there or why. I couldn't concentrate enough to read a recipe. I couldn't think straight.
You may need to seek help - medicines or therapy, or both to deal with this event.

yeah sometimes after i take big craps i black out and have no idea what i just did.

yap i have that too just need some rest and better to check with your dr too..

good luck!

This is very normal because you have been through shock. The question I have is are you still going through this and has it been six weeks after the event. If so then seek counseling

this is very common. the best advice is to seek some form of counseling to deal with the event and you will find your memory skills returning, I promise! Mental health counselling has come a long way and you can recover, I know.

Yes, The body has a mechanism that makes you forget traumatic events. But if the event really affected your life the trauma and the forgetfulness can continue. I had alot of things happen in my life at once and I was a scatter brain for ever!!! On top of not remember any details about the events. Its a survival mechanism so you will be able to move on later in life.

Yes I got very sick and suffer with anxiety disorders as well as post traumatic stress disorder I panic even when I get a cold

J, is that you? Email me.

No, I don't suffer short term memory loss usually. Instead the event is burned into my brain and I relive it over and over.

The one exception to this was a brutal police questioning back in '79. No effing idea what went on there.

Yes, too many times. One 'very extreme' example is when my father died after I took care of him 24/7 while he suffered from a severe form of cancer called 'metastatic mutiple myeloma'.
I still can't remember about three months after he died, and that was June 9th, 1998.
I love & miss him,
Trixxi
