yeah, you nailed it. see www.cchr.org. sings the same song. check it out. that site will tell you all about the rotten things they (psychs) do. tells you what you can do about it too.
www.alternativementalhealth.com (NOT .ORG) is another one.
vicious circle, that cycle is.
check it out. at least you can look.
good luck ya know.

Sorry you had a bad experience. That doesn't mean that your experience makes up the majority. I made it to pretty damm crazy before anyone handed me a pill or gave me a label. I am grateful for the medication. I respect and like my psychiatrist. I'm not on disability. I have no doubt that I have bipolar disorder. I also think that you are perhaps (but I might be wrong) in denial that your mom has a serious illness and are finding it easier to blame the doctor than to accept there's a real problem. If you question her care, encourage her to see another doctor. It would be far more effective than blaming and ranting.

sadly you have a point but there are cases where genuine mental illness requires the services of a good psychiatrist. Most psychiatrists will agree that there are too few and they do not have sufficient time to use cognitive therapy as well as medication where needed.

Yes too many are given labels and treated for conditions that are misdiagnosed. In the ideal world a combination of a good psychiatrist and a good therapist who helps the patient to understand their condition and shows how to deal with life issues in a healthy way would be great. Note however there are genuine medical conditions that need psychiatric care long term e.g Schizophrenia but many anxiety or mood disorders can be better treated with proper medication but also good general non pharmaceutical care.

You are right about the cycle of psychiatry. It is very frustrating to see different doctors and they all have a different diagnosis for you. It seems they are just out to make money off of people's struggles. They have helped many to stay alive though. Some medications do work for different problems. For serious depression, most people do need medication. It is not fun to be off work and disabled due to depression when before you had a full time job and went to school.

There will come a time when people more educated than psychiatrists themselves will stop seeing psychiatrists who are hooked on to drug therapy as the only remedy available in their tool box.
Whenever a doctor prescribe drugs for mood disorders it is sign that he does not understand the causes of "mental illness". Medication can treat the symptoms, but does nothing to treat the causes of mental illness. In fact, "mental illness" is the wrong term. It does not exist. What exists is that the mind being affected by a sick body, not being able to produce the right neurotransmitters.

These are produced from nutritional forerunners. For instance serotonin - our feel good neurotransmitter - is manufactured from tryptophan found in food. A whole array of other nutrients - vitamins and minerals and coenzymes and so on - are required to in the manufacture of serotonin.

Thus the new professions dealing with mood disorders will be Nutritional doctors and/or Clinical Nutritionists who have the tools to diagnose nutritional disorders.
