Medication for Depression?!

Question: What medication are doctors likely to give an under 18 for depression?

They're using this as a last resort.

There are different medicines that you might be prescribed-- and many of them really help! Depression in children and teens is on the rise -- and I myself was treated for depression as a teenager and it really helped me. It saved my life.

There are a few things you should be aware of if you're under 18 -- you should be seen by your doctor at least once a week when you start taking medicines and make sure you have a clear channel to report about how the medicines make you feel. For some pediatric anti-depression medications there are unwanted side-effect that although very rare may actually make depression or anxiety worse for people under 18 so you must SHARE with your parents or doctor how you really feel. If you have new feelings of sadness, any new physical symptoms or strange thoughts (such as about death or dying) you should talk to your doctor right away.

You might have some temporary physical side effects too -- (like feeling tired or not very hungry for a day or two) but the BENEFITS far outweigh the downfalls. Just be sure you talk to your doctor and find out before you take anything what is normal and what isn't.

Be well! and do take care!

i started taking lexapro when i was 15, and i'm 17 now. they probably will start you off with 10mL or so, depending on how much they think you should take.

go to a doctor and they will prescribe you. they can prescribe you almost anything really. I'm 15 and I've been on cymbalta and i am on lexapro.

they usually start you on Prozac, Buspar or Paxil. (Lexapro is not for depression....it's for anxiety problems.)

Zoloft or Lexapro are two of the best and safest ones
for teens.

does the person have anxiety also? if so, Zoloft will help
with both...even OCD if they have that too.
if they do not have anxiety problems, then go with Lexapro.

look both up. neither are supposed to make you gain weight
and do not have bad side effects. if they take Zoloft, make sure they do at night. it makes people drowsy.

p.s. lexapro IS for depression.
before i was properly diagnosed with bipolar disorder [mother didn't wanna believe me about it at first] the psych put me on Lexapro for anxiety attacks and severe depression.
even the official website said it's for that.
that's why it's called an antidepressant. not an anti anxiety medication.

choose either too.
Paxil and Prozac are VERY lethal to kids and teens.
big suicide rate.

I take wellbutrin for depression. It WORKS! No side effects for me. Not even weight gain. DON'T TAKE DEPICOTE! It has massive weight gain!
For sleep, take Serequil, it will knock you out. Side effects: eating, sleep walking, groggy the next morn, can't wake up, sleep for days...
