What's the point of depression?!

Question: There isn't a "point". A "point" would imply its something someone "does", as apposed to something someone goes through. Depression is caused by any number of things. A chemical imbalance caused by lack of serotonin in the brain, mental trauma, or genetic predisposition. There are several different types of depression

"A depressive disorder is a syndrome (group of symptoms) that reflects a sad mood exceeding normal sadness or grief. More specifically, the sadness of depression is characterized by a greater intensity and duration and by more severe symptoms and functional disabilities than is normal.
Depression symptoms are characterized not only by negative thoughts, moods, and behaviors, but also by specific changes in bodily functions (for example, irregular eating, sleeping, crying spells, and decreased libido). The functional changes of clinical depression are often called neurovegetative signs. This means that the nervous system changes in the brain cause many physical that result in diminished activity and participation."

No one wants to be depressed, its an illness, just like the flu.

Serotonin deficiency.

To come to the realization that hopelessness does in fact exist in everybody at some level. It's part of the human condition. Where people get bogged down is thinking that LIFE is hopeless just because a circumstance is hopeless. This is just nonsense.
Also, our culture teaches that there is no such thing as hopelessness and that "anything is possible with active faith." That's a lie. Ask a retarded person.

Don't get down just because you've found out that hopelessness exists in your life! Everyone has an example to share of personal hopelessness.

A THUMBS DOWN? That makes me depressed. :)

uhm, it means ur sad...

i think its when u want to commit suicide :[

If someone can answer this question, I also want to know what is the point of arthritis, or lupus, or cancer.

I'm not sure why it is although Iv'e had it quite a while but I suspect its the brains desparate attempt to survive a fatal situation.
You are aware that it's a shutdown of the production of certain chemicals in the brain?
Makes sense to me that if you are in a desparate enough situation the brain will simply try to shut down.

I dont think depression has a point. But if you mean 'reason', that could be alot of things. Are you seeing a therapist? That would help.

To love yourself and be a better person.

As a mental health professional with 20+ years experience, now retired, I can tell you that depression has many "points", in the biological and psychological arenas, and so, for me, the question is, where to begin. Since I'm not in the mood to write a dissertation or thesis, let me try to briefly comment that depression is a great indicator or warning light that something isn't right in your world and needs attention ASAP. It's also a great biological indicator that things aren't functioning medically as they should, AND, it's also a psyche builder, as strange as that may seem. Those who endure deeper and longer periods of depression also have the capacity to experience greater periods of joy and happiness, all within the realm of staying within the control of the individual and not becoming what we call "bipolar". Also within the psyche arena, one can realize that "spiritually" things are not okay, and as the famous psychiatrist, M. Scott Peck, M.D., wrote in his enormously best selling book "The Road Less Traveled", the area of our lives we call "spiritual" is hugely effected by and effects our biological and behavioral spheres, and needs regular attention.

I know this may appear as a "hit-and-miss" answer, but your question covers such enormous realms of issues that, in order to answer you in a professional manner, I'd be writing a book to you, and I don't think my fingers could handle it. I hope the issues I have presented give you some idea of the value of depression. God Bless you.

After being diagnosed with depression a few times. I come to wonder myself, if depression is really means to an end, rather than a uncontrollable condition of the brain.

Could depression be looked at as an excuse to anything you want to avoid, but feel you can't control the outcome?

While depressed, some look at the past and their mistakes, or the wrongdoings to oneself by others, and dwell on them thinking that it will happen again, so why not just go into withdrawal and avoid the chance of the negative happening to you.

i dunno, I feel I'm coming out of a depression episode right now. But this time I'm looking for the reasons rather than looking for a miracle pill, or a doctor giving me the diagnosis of depression.

In short, I really do think there are some people who honestly have mental disorders, but honestly I think the mass' of people diagnosed with depression is largely wrong. I mean, after all, is there anyone who can tell you how your feeling or what your thoughts are other than yourself?

Its so easy to go into a doctors office and show all the signs for clinical depression, get medications, and get time off work/school and have laws that back up your decision to do so.

I'm beginning to think that claiming the title of 'depressed' is just taking the easy way out.

I don't understand your question.

To me, "point" means purpose, so do you mean "what's the purpose of depression?"

Most people don't choose to be depressed.
