Can an individual with a mental illness act sane?!

Question: I'm doing a research paper on mental illness, and I'm trying to find information about rehabilitation and its effectiveness. My question here is if, when in inpatient treatment, if the mentally ill individual act sane in order to be discharged after a short stay instead of a longer term. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Are you talking manipulation? Yes definately.

You note Borderline Personality Disorder. People with BPD are notorious for being manipulative, it's part of theor disorder. Normally these patients are watched very carefully, and not released immediately.

It is quite possible to act sane with a mental illness. I was, numerous times, rushed to the ER for having suicidal ideation/attempts. I was never once admitted into the psych ward. Yes, I was very manipulative - but it wasn't because I thought it fun, it was because I was in "fight or flight mode" and I didn't want to be inpatient or having my rights taken from me. (This was because I knew the on-call psychiatrist on the unit and she was horrible and just perscribed meds, didn't listen.)

yup! manipulation works wonders
tell them your fine pretend pretend pretend and they let you out pretty quickly

Yes they can. Most paranoids tend to have a high IQ and can manipulate the doctors to let them out. I've seen this happen..scary huh? Yes, even if they are truly sick, they can do it. BTW people with borderline personality syndrome usually lead normal lives. They just tend to be narcissists and addicts, but still function in society.

I actually had a friend who went to visit her Grandmother in a mental ward and she ended up having a conversation with whom she thought was a nurse. It turned out she was talking to a mental patient who came across as sane until she said something about 'painting walls with strawberries'.

So I suppose so yes. But they'd probably be monitored and have regular check ups anyways.

Your question isn't worded clearly. Are you asking, "Do patients sometimes fail to report symptoms in order to be discharged from a hospital?".
Is thats your question, then yes. A mentally ill patient will resort to the same tactics a physically ill patient will in order to be released sooner.

Yes they can. That is a scenario that i believe happens more often than not. But being that the whole discharge process needs approval by doctors, nurses, viewing of notes, etc. They would need to be a pretty good performer.

trust me on this one... mental illness can not be faked...
when getting discharged from a mental ward in a hospital the patient needs to be interviewed by a therapist and psychiatrists.. the nurses also provide information to the doctors about day to day conduct in the ward... it also depends on how good the psychiatrist is.. there are evaluations that are done... mind you, many patients tend to cycle in and out on return visits.. it depends on the circumstances that brought the patient into the ward to begin with..

There are many many disabilities to go along with what you're saying. One would be multiple personality disorder. The patient uses the personality they think will have them discharged, and then they are back on the streets again. Murderers, rapists, and just regular civilians can all do this. It's a serious illness. You may want to try researching these type of people more on google, yahoo, dogile, etc.. see what other disabilities also use this manipulation tactic.

many times a person who has a mental illness can ne balanced out with medication and therapy. Those are not cures, however, it is a way for the individual to maintain stability.
A person who has been hospitalized typically goes to a follow up care. Such as a group home, half way house, or a residential care facility.

In all honesty, not everyone with a mental illness has to be in a psych ward or in therapy. I have bipolar disorder and ADHD, I went to therapy about 6 times before I was finally fed up with an idiot of a therapist and that was a year ago. Since then, I've been stable, to a point where if you had a few conversations with me...you wouldtn know I was bipolar. BP is just as bad as BPD or schizophrenia...cause the mood swings are pretty bad when its not treated. So yes. I'm sane, so are many many others with mental illnesses once they are on medication and have the will power to improve. I'm not even close to being insane....some do not need much therapy, so they act like they're fine...but some can function by themselves, which is what I did. I learned how to control it on my own.

Some people have more severe types of an illness, so they need a longer time. But as a bipolar guy...I know that I actually went through psychosis last feb. Because I was on an antidepressant....last march I was properly diagnosed, it took a month and a half for me to finally regain consciousness in how to control myself, sure I stll had mania issues..but they got better as time went by. Since march, I've only had 3 episodes. While when I wasn't on medication or knowing there's somethin wrong with me I had an episode that lasted for weeks, I think it was about 10 or so episodes in a year when it was developing.

So yeah..do the math! Just research on recovery for people with behavioral and personality disorders. Look up suicide rates and wahtnot, they normally show you how many commit suicide or attempt in medicated and non medicate.d

Good luck!
Remember, just because a person has a disorder does NOT mean they are insane. Pedophiles, rapists, molesters, and killers are.
Were actually very loving and deep people when we calm down!

Yes
and for the others who say people want to leave the hopital For some it can be the other way around people do at times want to go in to hospital and be in a lock ward and stay a for a while try it your self.
