Why do people self-harm?!

Question: there are many reasons why people self harm, each person is different:
one of the main reasons is to turn emotional pain into physical pain, which can be controlled. people often do it when they feel a lack of control over their life. it can also be so that the person feels something - some people feel completely numb, and need to feel pain or see blood to remind themselves that they are alive. also, the pain releases endorphins that make the person feel 'good', and it is these endorphins that become addictive. also, some do it as they want to see the blood - they feel the pain washes out of their body with the blood. others just need to see a lasting mark upon their skin. some do it as a cry for help when they feel that there is no other way to express their pain and how they truly feel. others do it for self-punishment - when they feel they have done something really wrong and need to be punished for it. others, though only a VERY SMALL NUMBER of people do it for attention - these people often show off their cuts (or any other marks of self harm). MOST PEOPLE however actually hide their cuts/marks/scars and feel ashamed about it or regret doing it, so people that say self harmers do it for attention are completely wrong. mainly, self harm is caused by some form of abuse, mental illness or low self esteem. it IS NOT a suicide attempt - self harm is used as a coping method to try to prevent the killing of oneself, though those who self harm are more likely to kill themselves.

i hope this has helped you to understand.
i'm glad you're asking why, rather than just judging, like many other people do.

It releases anger.

Because they are emotionally disturbed I guess.

Certain people feel this is the easiest route to take to release how they feel. It usually follows on from being depressed and some people feel physically hurting themselves will wash away what is going on.

I am currently suffering from depression after being bullied and have thought about self harm only once, but luckily I didn't follow through, as I know it doesn't solve anything. It is basically just a release.

Could be mental problem,
or being lack of self-control.

number a reasons, i came across a girl who self harmed her self to stop voices in her head, telling her to hurt other people.
I slso came acrodd a large lady who self harmed to stop her from going out at a lunch time and buying food, she would hide in the work toilets cutting her upper arms,

you need to get to know the person who is doing this to understand why they do this

they might be starting to believe the perception that everyone thinks they are bad.

all diffrent things.

things probly just get on top of people so much they feel trapped and the only thing to make them feel better is self harmin because 'they' think its the easiest way to lettin pain out when after they'll relise its not and it was a stupid thing to do because it leaves bad scars on you for life.

People start for different reasons, but once you've started it becomes icnreasingly hard to stop. It provides a release. The body releases endorphines or adrenilin or whatever to help you deal with the physical pain. It makes things seem that much easier. Take the emotional pain out physically and you get a release and it makes you feel better.

It's hard to explain to those who don't do it that not everyone does it for attention. Alot of people do their best to try and hide it.

People self harm for a lot of different reason
It's so hard to explain to a non harmer why you do it

some people do it to release the pressure in their mind
others do it for controll, other have had a lot of abuse and its their way to feel safe
i will ask you not to judge any one who self harms they are hurting more than you can imagine they need understanding not people judging them

Lots of different issues. Often it is to block out the emotional pain they are feeling, the physical pain is preferable to the mental anguish they are experiencing. Sometimes it is due to abuse as children, as neurologically pain has become linked to pleasure. Lots of different reasons, but NOT just because they are attention-seeking, after all there are lots of ways to get attention that don't involve hurting yourself.

An excellent book about self-harm is 'Cutting' by Steven Levonkron.

because when you self harm it release's the same brain chemicals as when you do heroin(not the same buzz just the relif) thats what my counseller said as well, someone whos self harmed said to a heroin addict when you do your heroin that feeling of relif is the same as when i cut my self

There are a variety of reasons.

I think one big one is that people feel so numb with what they are dealing with that self-harm lets them feel *something* and the so the self-harm may be comforting in an ironic kind of way.

In desperate measures they might not have a better outlet. It can be a silent cry for help or something a person takes great pains to hide.
(usually emotional response) possible reasons:
-sexual abuse
-stress
-their method of grieving
-just can't talk about it (it's actually a negative coping mechanism)
-way of gaining control over part of one's life when other things are out of control (similar to why one develops an eating disorder)
-to feel *something*
-relieve pain

It's not something that makes sense to people who do not self harm. Self harmers need supportive people who care about them, and they need to be open to using other outlets for their thoughts and emotions.

the information is easy to read and understand.

There really isn't a simple answer to your question, as there can be many different reasons as to why a person self harms, and what is a reason for one, won't necessarily be the same reason that another does it.

Contrary to popular belief, most people who self harm, are not seeking attention, and go to great lengths to hide away scars.

Some, but not all, reasons are; to feel in control, to stop themselves attempting suicide, to feel something, as a way of expressing their inner turmoil and torment to name but a few.

It is normally not just one thing that triggers this happening, but more often than not, it is an indicator that the person is struggling with some underlying reasons for the way they feel.

Hope this helps answer your question.

Attention whores

Attention seeking, cry for help. Self loathing. Could be various reasons.

It could be drug induced

It feels good.
