School troubles?!

Question: I have always been a straight A student up until recently. I had a really bad year last year outside of school, a break up, my mom had a heart attack, etc. I also suffer from depression and an anxiety disorder, and school can be a real struggle with that.

I ended up doing really poorly on my exams because of my mom's heart attack, and although my teachers cut me some slack and made my exams worth half what they would have been, I did very poorly.

Ever since then I have been going really down hill. I feel totally unmotivated and I just can't seem to focus on my work. I feel like its just not that important. But unfortunately, it is important, I'm in grade 12 now and my grades are the lowest they have ever been. If I go to university next year, I am going to need to work hard to get good marks, but nothing is going to change unless I do something about this.

Does anyone know why I am having such a rough time with school? What can I do to make it better?

I suffer from dep/anx also and i hear you. i made it through school, though, by making a schedule. I am in my 30s so i am older but i still do this: i schedule work, house work, self time, cooking, shopping, reading, exercise, etc. I don't mean you have to march to every second of the day, but it gives structure from the time you wake up to the time you go to bed. i am sorry about your mum and i hope she is doing better. this schedule will help her too to see that you are getting what you should be done. i assume school arleady does this to a degree, but make the scheduling bit extend into real life. if you can't finish in the time you think it will take, either forgive yourself or note you may need extra help during free time to work on it. always schedule time for yourself too. NO homework during this time!
definitely exercise for natural endorphines

Fortunately now days many heart attacts can be treated with great results. Senior year is hard in many ways as well as great. Focus on goals , improving nutrititon, and if you have failed anything think about summer make up classes if offered. A councelour could help with that. Let them know situation as you see it. I meantioned nutrtion as it can lead to sluggish feeling and depression. Increase C and B and iron. Some multi vits dont have iron and as a female we need it. Check books at library about nutrtion and what helps different disorders. If after 2-3 weeks you are still feeling down too often you may need a doctor to help. Good luck and it will get better soon *mamatx

You and I seem to be in a similar situation thought I am a year younger. I have a social anxiety disorder and my father committed suicide last year. I started to spiral down and only had 6 credits by the time grade 11 came around. What really helped me was that I had to take things away from myself until my school work was done, to give me a bit of motivation. I had a friend put a passwords on my computer and television everyday and only got the passwords if I went to school the whole day. As for not feeling the work is important I don't either (I learn more from spending an hour on the internet) but as long as you're sitting there in class you might as well get society off your back and do the work. It's either do it now and be successful for the majority of your life, do it latter and have a chance at success later on in life or don't do it at all be a leech.

Also a counselor can really help but make sure you find one thats interested in helping the public not one who is only in it for the money.
