Do you think depression is a real illness or all in the mind?!

Question: I don't mean to cause any offence to anyone. Just a general thought. I am not depressed myself in case you are wondering.

do you realise that a question like this, confuses me.
i think its time for the white coat brigade lol

depression is in the brain, so therefore it is a real illness and all in the mind =)

Ah, I love play on words.

Kinda a mix of both. That's why you'll hear it in terms of a "Mental Illness".

Depression is most often caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. It is a legitimate physical illness.

Depression is most literally a chemical imbalance in the brain which will prevent the sufferer from functioning normally on a day to day basis.

Why cant it be both? In many ways mental illness can be even more debilitating than an illness of the body. The stigma society puts on it makes it even worse.

I had depression 10 years ago and from what the Doc told me I had suffered it from early childhood!

Put me on pills and made me talk with someone, that someone was crazy!

But the depression carried on for a few years after that and so did the pills.. But, to be honest the pills made me feel worse. Once I stopped all that and started to enjoy my life, my depression went..

I use to say that my depression was all in my head and sometimes I think it was! But, I do know other people who have it as an illness..

Occassionally I get depressed and am not happy, but if I get out and do things that normal people do Im not so depressed after all :)

It is a real illness. There are different degrees. My grandmother was clinically depressed. Medication improved her condition considerably. Some people are able to handle and/or control their depression through diet and exercise.

edit: I have to agree. If you are isolated or allow yourself to be isolated then I think you will suffer from depression.

Go to webmd.com, there are many causes for depression. It is a real illness.

I guess by definition depression is all in the mind. But yes its a real illness with varying degrees of severity.

Just like a headache can be mild or a killer, the same applies to depression.

Consider some of the actions of depressed people and decide if you would do those things, such as self harm.

I glad your not depressed and if you consider that you are acknowledging that depression exists. People who live free of depression can find it hard to understand how the mind can turn on a person and be very debilitating.

Be safe, be sage

My friends cousin died from depression. So i say it is an illness.

It's a real illness.

The brain is a part of the body, and any part of the body can be afflicted by an illness. A lot of people don't understand that and believe the brain is somehow an abstract concept that is not subject to the same conditions as any other part of the body.

I always thought that was funny that some people say "it's all in your mind" and believe that means it isn't real. It just isn't true.

Maybe somebody can talk themselves out of a mild episode of depression, but that's not the way it works when someone has true clinical depression. A lot of people confuse depression with normal sadness; it's not the same thing.

It is absolutely a real illness; it just happens to be located in the mind.

depression is real, hope you never experience it.

It is a real illness. I live with someone who has it all the time.

If it wasn't insurance companies wouldn't bother paying for peoples treatment.

it's in the mind
when your depressed you don't throw up (sorry for mentioning that) or need to go to the hospital
you do those things when your ill not depressed
