Is addiction (drugs, gambling, pornography) ultimately a choice?!

Question: Statistically, most drug addicts quit (if they don't first kill themselves with an overdose), and many do so by simply 'quitting'. Yes, it hurts, but they seem to be able to do it! Are the others simply choosing to remain addicted?

technically speaking, yes its a choice...now there is more involved, such as willpower and pure physical addiction...but in the end it was still a choice to begin using in teh first place and a choice to continue...its a choice to get help, its not easy by any means, its the hardest work some people ever have to do in thier lives ut in the end... it IS a choice
its like any addictions counselor will tell you, they have to want to help themselves first or rehab will do nothing for them...u can put them in detox but if they dont choose to be well, they will return to thier bad habits, yes its a choice

When addiction first starts, and it becomes a problem for someone, they don't have a choice. Their bodies, and mind are both addicted. But if after recieving help such as an intervention, therapy, in-patient treatment, gone to AA or NA or GA, and absolutely refuses to get clean and sober, then it does become a choice to stay drunk or high; or to gamble.

There are dangers of inaccuracy when trying to reduce human behavior judgements to black or white, yes or no. There is a major phenomenon in the universe called inertia. What that means is that it is easiest to go with the flow, and it is hardest to make changes that will resist the flow.

If it were a case of having to make a specific choice every day to continue an addiction, then there might not even be such a thing as an addiction. Abiding in any behavior pattern is usually a default, not a conscious choice.

It takes courage to make a change that will be painful. It takes courage to be a person with a purpose and a direction. Some people may never find it if they have no self-awareness. We are not born with self-awareness.

I believe that they are. If they tryed to over come thier addiction hard enough they would eventually give it up but most ppl dnt use all thier will power or focus on gettin betta!!! like they alsways say!!! where theres a will theres a way!!!!

Yes.

But I believe only because they don't have the strength to quit.

No, not all people who are addicted to drugs want to be. I know people who are addicted to prescription sedatives and have a really hard time trying to get off of them. It is not by choice but because they were prescribed by a doctor and it just happened that they got addicted over years of taking them.
There are others however that take drugs just for fun and yes, these are a choice, especially if they have quit using them and go back to them again just for fun. These would be street drugs most of the time.
To answer your question, it just all depends on what they are taking and why.
The others such as gambling, porn, etc. can be easily dealt with. If a person has enough faith in the Lord and asks for help, they can overcome these things.
