Over eating sparked by depression?!

Question: everytime i feel depressed the first thing i think about is food. I am in high school and have a lot of stress from school work and teachers. Growing up my dad had a brain tumbor and then had radiation which was overdosed and burned his spinal cord which left him a quadreplegic. He now has to live in a nursing home and he is only 47 years old. I remember always turning to food to comfort me. I am not really fat now, but i can tell that i have put on weight over these last couple months. Just between the stress of school and my dad's situation i get sad and turn to food. Do have any suggestions that i could do to distract myself from over eating because i am depressed?

i agree with the first post, counsellor's do help. i know you're probably overwhelmed with your dad's situation, but it is out of your control so you have to learn to make time to look after yourself.

depression causes all sorts of symptoms and unfortunately over eating is a major one. go see your doctor or maybe a nutritionist . they'll help you work out some sort of plan to turn to good foods instead. getting it sorted during school is a good idea, it'll set you up for better habits in the future. good luck!

I think you need to see a therapist...you have a lot going on in your life, and food is NOT going to fix it! Go to the school counselor and ask for some help or a good referral. kjl

That is a hard one to overcome. You can try stuff like eating fruit instead of junk food, take a walk when you start reaching for the chips or if possible, just don't buy any junk foods or easy to reach/microwave stuff. Have stuff that you actually have to take time to make!! It is soooo easy to just grab and eat, but if you have to take the time to cook it, it is a bit of a deterrent.
