How can I stay motivated to lose weight?!

Question: I been walking for about a month now. I would bundle up and walk 30 minutes 3 times a day. I ended up losing like 10 pounds in 2 weeks. I stopped walking about a week because of the weather. And then I bought a treadmill. Ive had it for about 2 weeks now. I went from 261-263 to 251 this morning in a month. Ive lost weight on my stomach because when I lay on my side, it doesnt hang out like it used to, and I can feel my hip bone now when I press my side lightly. Ive been walking from 60 minutes to 90 minutes a day. My mom came up to me earlier in the day and said "youve lost weight because I can put my arm around you" lol

But I feel like im giving up. Even though ive lost weight, I dont feel any better about myself. Its might be from personal problems and depressed about dropping out of school. Im going to go back next year probably with a new look and some confidence and not let social anxiety tear me apart.

How can I stay motivated?

Im 16 years old.

Okay, you must remind yourself that you have only begun to lose that weight...I am dieting also, and every time I want to find an excuse to blow the diet, I remind myself that my depression is partly because of the weight I gained this year, because of my feet injuries...and that it only makes it worse, if I gain the weight back...So I am walking also, all day, in spite of the pain I am in from my feet,..but you have a huge advantage, because your skin bounces back and you are young, and this will affect your whole life...Ask God to give you the strength to continue......you won't have that social anxiety when you become slim and have your confidence back, I assure you,..so good luck stick to it, and go for it!

Aw, you're so sweet, I wish you the BEST!!!! Report It

  • One way is to look at the long-term consequences of not losing weight. In the UK there are frequent TV programmes following people who are trying to lose weight and they show what they would look like at 40 (if they get there) and this often shocks people.

For 16 year olds it might not be the best option as teenagers (in general- maybe not you) "live for the moment" and worry about the future later.

I have had to break some bad habits recently and have askd my wife to support me by asking me questions to check I'm not "hiding things". One of these was that I would constantly buy food from service stations during the day. Not only can't we afford it, but it isn't doing me any good.

Our plan is that if I resist buying the food all week, then I can have a food reward at the weekend. Also, If I fail, I don't see my friends. I have "passed" 6 weeks out of 8 now!

Maybe you could try something like that?

This is hard but my mum says take each day as a new day and if you mess up one day or go for a treat start afresh the next with no guilt.

She has lost 11 stone...154 pounds

    Hope that helps good luck

Sounds like you're doing brilliantly well - I wish I could say the same.

From your second para, sounds like you could add in some exercises - isometrics - stomach crunches etc and body work-out. Working the muscles, apparently, speeds up the metabolism and the rate at which you burn fat and is a great adjunct to all the aerobic exercise you're doing.

It can also be really enjoyable - especially if you get a work-out partner and then you tend to motivate each other.

Walking on a treadmill is pretty boring. It would be better if you did exercise that was more interesting. Walking in the woods or even exploring new parts of the city where you live. Exercise is not the only key to losing weight. Are you doing anything about your diet? Keep at it and think of the results too. Think how you'll feel better walking into clothes shops and how you'll have more energy and be able to do things and play sports you can't at the moment.

walking is a great weight to lose weight. try and add a little cardio to your workout even if it is like twice a week. eat healthy foods like fruit and vegeatables. look at some before pictures of you tape them somewhere in your room and then take some now pictures of you and in like thirty days take some more that might inspire you to lose more weight. or find a picture on the iternet or out of a magazine article and put it somewhere where you see it every day and say i want to look like that. take a notebook and write down what you all eat in day. stick to more healthy foods and then when you loose a lot of weight in one week you can look back and see what you ate that responded with your body to lose the weight. as far as school kids can be mean. if your worried about the whole going to school and being 17 in 9th grade do a home schooling thing my sister got her HSED through Penn Foster. i wish you the best of luck i hope that this helps you or gives you some thought. but another thing it doesn't matter how much you workout eating has a lot to do with losing the weight.? good luck and keep doing what your doing!!!

Look at what motivated you to lose the weight in the first place. Look forward to the results. Set goals that are realistic. I know with me, I had to say to myself I have to lose 2 lbs at the end of the week. it worked and I really was losing like 3 to 4 lbs and that is what kept me motivated. By the way you are doing wonderful.
Keep your eye on the prize!!!!!!!!!!!!

it seems to me that you are doing really well and you have really put energy in what you are doing!

the first step is to acknowledge that you are doing well.

we beat ourselves up far too quickly and get into depressed mode which can lead to unhealthy eating.

if you worry a lot about stuff out of your control, then realise that it's not your responsibility to worry about that.

concentrate on making your life better and that of the people around you. this is what makes life enjoyable.

so enjoy cooking healthy food for yourself, enjoy giving your body some good exercise, enjoy studying and increasing your knowledge.

treat yourself to these things and have a great time!
