On a first visit to a psychologist, it will be filling out forms, going over the fee schedule, and the appointment times available.
There will be a series of questions scattered over the time that are aimed at assessing your condition, checking memory, and simple things like "who is the President" What's today's date.
One of the "getting down to business" questions will be :
"What brings you here today?"

To respond to this question, I suggest you take a 3X5 card with you, on one side, explain your problem. On the other side, write down your questions. Keep this with you so you can refer to it and get all your questions answered.

Toward the end of the appointment is time for you to ask
what the psychologist believes to be your problem, and how that problem would be addressed in counseling/therapy.
Ask how often appointments would be scheduled.
An approximate duration of the therapy.
What does "wellness" look like if I complete my therapy?
When this Dr is unavailable, will there be a back-up person you can call?
As far as phone calls, if you feel you are having a crisis, can you call in the night?
What sort of "calming techniques" does this Dr use?

Dont worry. They are there for you. It's all about you being comfortable. The Dr. won't ask you to do anything you don't want to do/talk about.

Just go in with an open mind. Sometimes it really helps when a person just listens to you talk about yourself. That's their job, and they wouldn't do it if they didn't like it.

You matter! They feel the same way about you. Get better and feel good about yourself, you are doing a good thing!

The first time you see a psychologist they will just be gathering a lot of information about your health history. They will want to know about your family health history. They will want to know all about you. They will want to know what symptoms you have been feeling. They won't be digging into "issues" the first time you see them. Mainly just getting to know you. Then they will discuss with you a treatment plan and how they think they can help you. It is a great idea to see a psychologist. I love my doc and I wish everyone could have someone like him to talk to. It is a completely selfish relationship where I get all the benefits. You can't find a friend like that! Enjoy this experience and use it as an opportunity to learn how to be a healthier and happier person. However, if the relationship with your psychologist doesn't feel right, that's OK too. It is OK to switch to another dr if this first one doesn't seem to click with you.
